Would it look bad if..

I am a sophomore in high school and I am currently taking French II. Would it look bad if I dropped French? I want to focus on more academic classes.
Thanks :)

In a simple sentence: Yes. Colleges prefer people who take 3-4 years of foreign language. What colleges are you aiming for?

Well - it would look better if you pursued French for four years but I don’t think it would be a substantial detriment to drop it. Why do you want to drop French?

French II is an academic class, and colleges want you to have three (sometimes required, almost always recommended) or four years (usually not required, often recommended) of a foreign language.

@Hawkace I would like to go to Georgetown or Penn. I have safety schools though.
@preamble1776 I am struggling to keep my A up and I would like to take more academic classes. Like double up on science

Last time I checked, French is an academic class. Yes, it would look bad.

@halcyonheather @skieurope I guess I’ll have to go change my schedule now… I hope it isn’t too late.

Are you in an accelerated French class (honors or equivalent)? If you’re struggling, you can take a lower level to continue it (but I don’t really consider struggling to keep an A actually “struggling” but you get my point.)

Our two ivy admits only had two years of their foreign languages but they had very dynamic schedules so they really can’t be used as the standard.

@preamble1776‌

what do you mean “very dynamic schedules”?

@Kawaiiii - They took very advanced courses both inside and outside of the school, along with additional courses over the summer. They took well over 8 math courses, both in the high school and at the local university - along with summer courses at MIT, etc.

@preamble1776 I plan on taking many AP courses inside and outside of school, and if my family can afford it, some courses over the summer. I am also involved in track, a lot of ECs, and I volunteer. I will be extremely busy and cannot fit French III into my schedule.
