I know that Syracuse has the 3 year requirement and that UMiami, Penn State and UF do not. My son is in exactly the same situation as you are, and dropping Spanish will mean eliminating Syracuse from his list. On the other hand, I’m worried that continuing with Spanish may do more harm to his GPA than it is worth.

So heres the next part of my question: say I drop the spanish and am still interested in Syracuse; Would I not be admitted there automatically, or would i just have to take a spanish class there?

The larger goal that the colleges have is to have students with a certain level of proficiency in another language. Occasionally if you are super strong in other areas they may forgive the 3rd year of language but be aware that it is a calculated risk. Can you study and take the SAT2 in spanish? If you can hit something like a 650, go ahead and drop the class but send in that score. At my daughter’s college, a language score higher than 650 excuses the student from taking foreign language in college. So I would then think that you could risk not taking another year.

If you do continue with Spanish, be sure to take the SAT2 at the end of your senior year in hopes of not having to take more Spanish in college or have the option of starting a different language.

this comes up again. my spanish final tomorrow and i feel like I will fail it.

got a B- on my spanish final. :)
