Would it make a difference if your name has a space or not

For example,

if my name was bobjoe but I put it as bob joe on my apps because it was like that on my HS transcript, would it matter? Is it best to go with what it says on my Social Security card?

Yes, it's best to go with what's on most of the Social Security card and Birth Certificate. You can put your name the way you prefer it on the "Nickname" line. If your high school transcript doesn't match your Social Security card, try to talk to the school to get that changed.

the thing is my ss card doesnt have a space and my green card has one. does that make a difference as well?

Ooh...That could be a problem. Your best bet is to e-mail the universities and ask them.

can I make a side note saying i might have a different version of the name?
Would that help?

That might work. I'd still send an e-mail to the admissions office first. You might want to send e-mails to a few different universities to see if their responses are the same. If the university has an automated system of sorting applicants, you might get lost in the shuffle. I'm sure they'd be able to find you eventually, but the admissions office can avoid headaches if this is correct before you apply.
