Would love some EC advice!

Hi! I'm a rising junior and I've started really thinking about how my ECs will look on college apps. I'm looking at schools like WashU, Wake Forest, UNC Chapel Hill, Notre Dame, UVA, etc! If y'all could let me know how my ECs would look to schools like these, I'd be so grateful! Thanks so much!

I have a few different "categories" of ECs, but my main focuses are dance, education, and volunteering with special needs kids and in ministry with children. Everything included in this list I have either already started or plan on doing by senior year.

Member of special needs club through school (10, 11, 12) - approx. 2 hr/week
Peer helper in special needs dance troupe (10, 11, 12) - approx 1 hr/week
Volunteer at autistic recreation center for youth and young adults (10, 11, 12) - approx. 3 hr/week
Dance classes (since age 3) - between 2-5 hr/week
Member of prestigious school dance troupe (11, 12) - 10 hr/week
Choreographer for two different school dance ensembles (10, 11, 12)
Student leader for junior high youth group (11, 12)
Volunteer at youth group's camp (month-long)
Tutor at reading/writing center (11, 12) - approx 2 hr/week
Assistant teacher for sophomore math class (12) - approx 2 hr/week

I am also tentatively planning a missions trip to Africa to visit a school my church sponsors, and to raise money and support for the children there.

Thank you so much for your thoughts! I really appreciate them.

Bump 10char :)

Bump! I would really love some opinions on how I’m doing and how I can improve!

Bump! Anyone?

Your EC’s look average to slightly above average. As long as you have the academics for those schools you should be fine.
You could improve by having some awards. Enter a few dance competitions and see how you do.

@bandgeek1 Thank you very much for the advice! I forgot to mention that I am planning on creating a dance therapy program for autistic teens/young adults, would that look good as well?

have you heard of the website, www.■■■■■■■■■■ you can create a profile there and that website chances.

Definitely! That may even be what you want to write your mini essay about on the common app! Great work!

@MZGOOFY11 I have heard of Cappex, but thanks so much for responding! :)

@lexieam Thanks!! Sorry, just for clarification – write my mini essay on what? The dance therapy program?

Bump! Any more opinions?

Bump! Can anyone give me some opinions?

If you want opinions on your chances from lots of people, try ************** and ask them to chance you, keeping in mind your extracurriculars (make a profile and then a post that specifies this).

Personally, I think your ECs are great (and as a dancer I admire your large commitment to dance - and choreography too!). A dance award that give you lots of recognition and money is YoungArts (for 17 to 18 year olds). Look around for local competitions, chances to show that you are a prima ballerina (or great at whatever type of dance you do). All your dance activities look great, but if you have some styles that you do the most in, or one style you like to choreograph most, you should work in a way to mention this, if it might be beneficial. If you take ballet/jazz/hiphop/lyrical/modern/tap/pilates/Zumba then you should just stick with the word “dance” though :D

A dance therapy program is a great hook!

You could add variety (and save money for college) by applying for a modeling job for a dance catalog (if you have the looks). If my sister does this, I’ll let you know how it works out for her.

UNC looks for NOT well-rounded students - students with a couple of passions, rather than ones that joined every club. You qualify for that with all your dance activities. It’s hard to get into from OOS (82-83% have to be from NC).

And keep in mind that ECs are always only part of the picture, and that academic honors and credentials can get you somewhere, too. If you plan to apply as a dance major, your ECs effectively replace much of the need for academic honors, however. Because you sound like you’d make a great dance major!

@BelleNiente Thanks so much! I’ll check out YoungArts!

Bump! Any more opinions before I give up bumping this? Thanks so much!

If your mission trip to Africa works out, that would be quite helpful. The other ECs look fairly average.

@SWhittington12 Thanks for the response! I’m really hoping it’ll work out.
