Hi, I would like to go to carnegie mellon and i am on my mom's side spanish-moroccan, so I can write that I am either African-American(Im white) or Hispanic(Which would seem more likley because I have a spanish surname)..Or i can write both. Will any of these help me? Which Should I Write? And what are my chances of getting in with this GPA?And If I apply early action? I have solid extra curriculars so far and havent taken the SAT's yet
( I have a 3.65 GPA in a very competitive high school)
Thanks alot

Moroccan is North African, and not considered “African American” by the census bureau.

Thanks…what about hispanic(my moms family was from spain before hand)

Nope, Spain= White

I would put African-American and Hispanic if I were you. This will increase your chances.

You should read the thread. Says write however you identify. Some would say write whatever you’ve written in the past, whatever you wrote on your SAT.

How much do these things usually help?(If I was to put down hispanic and african american anyways)

A lot. 10char

^ it depends on the school, but since you cant, it doesnt matter

Spain = Hispanic and Morocco = African.

Shall I go into a History lesson?

Skin tones is taken into account, not country, and hispanics are from the descendants of Latin American countries

It’s all about how he or she chooses to identify him or herself. I know a lot of “white” people who are definitely not white in skin tone. Skin tone is genetic - culture is not.

But thats the thing, colleges dont use culture as a factor, only genetics, if a kid actively practices the culture of Kenya, but is white as snow, he/she is expected to put down white

my skin tone of my brother is very hispanic(dark) and I am pretty white, does that make him hispanic and me white?

nah he’s white

Okay, going on the basis of genetics, if a kid’s mom is Spanish-Moroccan, then the kid is also Spanish-Moroccan, no?

If both of his parents are white, then he is therefore white

Well from that standpoint , I am at least as hispanic as many hispanics and southern americans because many of them are descendent from spainards…Skin color isnt the issue-All hispanics are either white, black or a combonation. I just happen to be 100% white?

Hmmm here’s what I think, Hispanics= Mestizos

No, at least most of the immigrants I see here are 100% native american-- and the white ones tend to be rich and wouldent immigrate to the U.S anyways
