Hi, in my country we are forced to play the recorder from around grade 1 to grade 8. So my question is, would this count as playing an instrument as an EC? I mean we did have to do it for a whole 8 year time-span if not longer whether you liked it or not (for the schools I went to atleast I don't think they would force you to do it at other schools). Thanks in advance.

Do you still play it in high school?

I. Hate. The. Recorder.

But the question is true… Do you still play it in high school?

No, I stopped in the 8th grade but since high school down here starts at the 7th grade I guess you could say that I continued it during a part of high school?

They stop music classes in the 8th. I guess my school is one of those “doctor/lawyer/business person” schools lol

Yes, but that’s like saying “I wrote one article for the school paper, so I’m still a staff member right?” or “I took one art class so I’m going to put pottery down for one of my ec’s”. It’s not really accurate. You didn’t really play it. It would be like me saying dancing is one of my EC’s because I took a dance class freshman year. Sure, I had to do a performance and took the class, but today it means nothing to me. It was a cheap required gym credit so I didn’t have to take cardio. I wouldn’t put it down. If it means nothing to you now and wasn’t too big of a concern as just a requirement then it’s not worth it.

I see what you mean, thanks for the help.

No.

Because that would just make every band geek/orch dork really angry.

I get to school an hour early three times a week for jazz band and I stay after school an hour each week for regular band and an hour each week for drum line. I also do one hour a week with a music mentor student. That’s 9 hours a week of just class time. That doesn’t even include practicing, clinics, performances, etc.

Playing a recorder before 9th grade because it’s required doesn’t constitute as an EC in my book. You’re not really invested in it.

FYI, I played recorder in 5th grade and clarinet in 6th-8th grade, but that isn’t going on my college apps. Only 9th-12th grade clarinet/tenor sax is going on there.
