Hi everyone! I'm very curious about my chances for a merit scholarship, because from what I've read, scholarships at Maryland are very hard to come by. It would be so helpful if I could get someone's opinion on my chances at stuff like Banneker Key, etc

SAT: 2280 (800 CR, 740 M, 740 W)
UW GPA: 3.85
W GPA: 5.40
Rank: Top 2%
APs: 6 so far, all 5s. Will be taking 5 in senior year
SAT IIs: 690 Math IIC (will retake and hopefully break 700...), 740 Bio, 750 Lit

ECs: 400 volunteer hours, President of Kids Helping Hopkins, VP of Future Physicians, other standard CC stuff

I'm also in-state and Asian, but idk if this has a bearing on scholarship chances. I'm hoping this is an advantage... maybe... please... haha

First of all you should know that BK is like Ivy league admissions, no one knows how in the world they do it. In my opinion, GPA is the only setback since most BK’s are 4.0’s and almost all have a 3.9+. You mostly likely get some scholarship, most probably presidents, which is 5000 for 4 years for in state students.

FutureA, your SAT subject test scores aren’t that high, especially the math. Maryland doesn’t require those scores, and unless you get them higher, I wouldn’t send them. Remember you are sending them only the information that gives them the best possible impression.

While 690 on the Math 2 doesn’t sound too bad, it’s actually down in the 62nd percentile or so, so that’s really a low score that I would worry about reporting. You need to check the annual SAT subject tests percentile rankings. I don’t know which Bio you took, so can’t give you that one, but you can see 2012 rankings here:

I didn’t see the 2013 rankings right off the bat, you can search for that.

Even a 750 on the Math 2 is fairly low (71st percentile) for ivy league/highly competitive admissions.

You look really good otherwise, so don’t submit anything that doesn’t confirm your otherwise very good stats. I agree you look might garner a President’s scholarship, but do keep in mind it depends not only on your stats but on the stats of your fellow students.

Our kid was fortunate enough to receive B/K and we personally know of another (both OOS). The other kid is a NMF, Pres Scholar, perfect standardized test and great ECs.

Our child stats: 35 ACT, Math2 SAT 790, Phy SAT 780, valedictorian, NMF, and fair to good ECs (but not the type that started a foundation or raised thousands $$ for a cause). Did not apply to any ivies but did apply to some top 20, some 20-50 (according to US News) and a couple of safeties (state school). Results: 6 full tuition offers, 2 COA offers, and a few partial tuition. Decided on Maryland B/K and from the people we spoke to at the B/K interviews, everyone was waiting to hear back from the ivies or Stanford/MIT/CalTech or weighing options for other full scholarships so we guessed the candidates’ stats were all outstanding! Everyone seemed very qualified, well spoken, and deserving on all of our interviews (we ended up going to 5 and said no to 2 invitations to fly out because the timing was difficult and we were pooped by the end of the process).

I think you would more likely get a Presidential scholarship or something lower. Your stats are very good but like the others have said, they are not exceptional.

You definitely have a shot at BK, but like others have said the process isn’t really understood that well. I had stats pretty similar to yours (OOS and biracial so I don’t know if that changes anything) and I got the full BK scholarship, so it’s definitely possible for you. It’s not a sure thing at all since the process is so random, but I would be surprised if you didn’t get a merit scholarship of some kind.
