Would self-studying languages count as an EC?

Recently I've developed an interest in learning languages for fun...I'm focusing on Russian and Spanish at the moment, but I doubt I'll get good enough at these languages to be able to take AP tests/other major exams in them. Is this still worth pursuing?

what do you mean by “count as an EC”? Who do you plan to have do the counting? Most colleges admit students without regards to ECs, just based on scores and grades (even if they have a section on the app to list ECs). For the top schools that really care about ECs, member of this or participant in that doesn’t really help.

If I understand you correctly, you plan on studying languages in your spare time but not even to the level of passing a 1st year exam. Just out of curiosity, why do you think colleges that care about ECs would consider this the equivalent of winning a statewide academic or athletic award, of being student body president, etc?

Of course it would count!
