Would SMU be a dumb choice?

My sister went there, and I know every single person I've talked to would not trade their college experience for the world.

It seems like the perfect college experience, cool city around you, so much to do, tailgating, frats, and beautiful campus.

I just am pretty liberal, and have always thought that the whole vibe there was so conservative/ almost to the point of being pretentious and snobby.

Are there any similar schools that might not be as pretentious, but still have the same aspects I look for?

I have about a 3.8 W GPA and a 2100 SAT with Varsity Lax and other ECs.. Would you say I have a good shot?

Thanks so much.

Are your politics similar to your sister’s?
What does she say about the issue?

They have a pretty good business program–and Fort Worth is a nice area to live in/go to school at. I don’t think it’s a dumb choice at all. Now going to Pentacostal CC in Pensacola, FL–that’s a dumb choice.

It’s not a dumb choice if your plans are to stay in the Dallas area and you’re fine with the politics of that area / region and you don’t mind a bit of an inbred culture.

Wow–now that’s arrogant!

Yes, Dallas has its own culture but it’s no more inbred than any other major city. If you want to go big in Big D SMU is the school.

Agree with Barrons - if you plan on living in Dallas it’s great choice. If you want to live elsewhere after school, well it ain’t bad but it doesn’t have as great as a reputation as you would find in Dallas.

Seriously, just shut up.

I am a senior at SMU and absolutely love it. Wonderful choice! If you have specific questions, feel free to message me.

P.S - SMU is a few minutes from downtown Dallas, in a very affluent community. It is not located in Fort Worth, that is TCU. SMU’s rival.

I’ve been quite a few times since my sister attended, and it really is so pretty.

I just don’t know how I’d react to the overly conservative politics, and the SUPER SUPER SUPER wealthiness/even snobbishness of the majority of students.

I am here to tell you they are not all wealthy. My daughter is hoping to go to SMU and it all depends on Financial Aid.

If you think it might be too conservative, then start a Mustang Liberal club… but I’m sure you’ll find one is already there!

My S just accepted. He too was at first concerned by labels people use describing SMU. But like most stereotypyes, all you have too is look beyond the all too easy phrases. Spend 10 minutes watching the students walking around and you will realize SMU has a very wide range of students from all walks of life.

Sure Dallas is more conservative than LA or NY but that is just a label, any community large or small has a wide range of people living there.

Scratch beneath the surface and you would find SMU is a great school, like many other choices, where a student can excel and be happy too !

I’m going to SMU in the fall and I’m not super super wealthy. The ONLY reason I am even able to go is because of the scholarships I have recieced, which cuts down the cost to a little below a state school. I don’t think I’m snobby. I have a few other friends there already and I know that they aren’t rich either. And not all rich kids are snobby anyways. You can just hang with me if you don’t like everyone else. :)
