I’m writing my letter of continued interest for my deferral from UofM, and I’m struggling with length. Currently it’s a page and a half, but I don’t know what to cut. I’ve always struggled with brevity.
If someone with experience in these matters would be willing to help me sharpen it up and decide what can be omitted I would really appreciate it!
Last cycle UofM specifically said they only wanted midterm grades and nothing else. Unless that has changed, I wouldn’t send a LOCI at all, let alone a long one.
It shouldn’t be any longer your original post right here. Otherwise, it is a second essay, not a LOCI.
Thank them for considering your application.
Express a continued interest in attending if accepted.
Share one thing the supports your application that you may have overlooked, or a recent accomplishment since you hit ‘send’ the first time around.
@butterrfly999 whatever you wrote tear it up. Yes, if rejected send in a loci. This is coming from advice from few college counselors that I know that work at very top schools in our state. Saying that it goes to your regional Michigan’s counsler for your school.
Dear xxxx,
Even though I am disappointed with my deferment, please let me know what else you need from me to show my commitment to the University of Michigan. I can see myself growing educationally and socially and being involved with the Michigan community. Please except this as my letter of continued interest.
I disagree that a rejection ought to be met with a LOCI. A rejection is the end of the line and further communication beyond maybe a thank you note for being considered is unwanted communication. A deferral, however, with Michigan should definitely be responded to with a LOCI unless admissions makes it clear this year they don’t want them.
*Slight grammar correction, but it definitely matters for a LOCI: use “accept” instead of “except”
@butterfly999 Feel free to send me a direct message with your LOCI if you are deferred.
Hi i know this is an odd request but I need some guidance for 2021 admissions I was deferred from umich EA and I know that they have an area for expression of continued interest but should I also send an LOCI to my local admissions counselor and what are they asking for in the ECI?
It wouldn’t hurt to do both. I suggest doing the form first, then sending your rep an email letting them know that you completed the form already but also wanted to reach out to them directly. No rush, but I’d do it before Feb 15.
If your school is handling classes different this year and your transcript looks different then past years, recommend including an explanation so that the regional counselor and admissions folks have some context about how your course load and grades this year compare to previous years or to other applicants from your high school in previous years.
