Would these SAT scores put me in good range for OOS applicant?

Hi, I'm a high school junior planning on applying to UMich CAS Early Admissions this fall. I just got back my May SAT scores, which were W:670, M:710, CR: 740 (1380/2120). As an out of state applicant, would these put me in good range for the applicant pool? I'm aware Mich only takes the highest single sitting as well.

Also, how heavily does Michigan weigh SAT writing? If they weigh it less, than exactly how less? ("less" seems a little too vague)

It will really depend more on your GPA than your SAT score. Your May SAT scores should be good enough if the rest of your application is good enough. A better score would probably not make a difference if you have a low GPA. I think they look at SAT writing but it probably is not a big factor.

What does “CAS” mean?

He means LSA I think. CAS stands for the college of arts and sciences, which Michigan doesn’t have. I could be wrong though. GPA and strength of curriculum matters most in terms of Michigan admissions. Your test scores are good enough to get you in. Probably in the middle 50% range.

Thanks for the responses guys! But I was wondering is UMich expects out-of-state applicants to have higher scores in general? On that same note, does UMich “discriminate” (probably not the best word, but I can’t really think of anything else) against OOS?

Just saying that’s a 1450, not 1380. You count the math and critical reading, not the writing when it’s out of 1600.

Well none of us work in admissions so we don’t know exactly how they do it but yes, it is harder to get in OOS and it seems like standardized tests aren’t weighted as high as GPA but obviously there is nothing we can say besides “less”.

I know People that work in admissions and they don’t discriminate against OOS. In fact they want your money to be honest. Michigan expects OOS to be stronger students in terms of raw stats and curriculum difficulty.

It really depends on 2 factors.

 1. Your GPA, what do you want to study, how you did in classes that are similar to that, ect.
 2. How many applicants they get next year. This upward trend could really hurt OOS applicants, but I don’t think it will jump as much as it did this year.

What is your GPA? How many AP’s have you taken/how many are offered to you?

Michigan does not weigh the SAT heavily. The University actually deemphasizes the SAT/ACT and weigh classroom perfermance far heavier than test scores. As such, GPA and school curriculum are more likely to determine your chances. If you have a 4.0 GPA and took a bunch of AP courses, your SAT will be sufficient to make Michigan a match school for you. On the other hand, if you have a 3.5 GPA and did not take difficult courses, Michigan will be a reach, even if you ace the SAT/ACT.

And yes, Michigan looks more closely at the CR and M sections of the SAT. The W section is not at all important, which bodes well for you.
