Would this be a concern to my future roommate?

I'm a senior in high school who will be attending college next year. I question on whether my allergies would be a problem to my future roommate and even suitemates. I have sensitive skin, and basically only use things that are product for sensitive skin. Along with having sensitive skin I'am also allergic to different chemicals ( part of having sensitive skin), most popular would be fragrance ( perfumes, colognes etc...). I couldn't imagen having air freshners, or anytype of fragrance being sprayed within my dorm nor the bathroom. I was wondering how could this affect those I dorm with? What would you do?

Isn’t “coolbrezze” a deodorant fragrance though?

I would imagine that would be a problem if you have a communal bathroom.

You should definitely talk to your roommate about it right after you move in. Maybe you could work out a compromise or something? Like s/he uses the fragrance after you’ve left the room and won’t be back for a few hours? Good luck!

I would HIGHLY recommend trying to get a single in this situation. It is the best way to avoid conflict. I’m sure it won’t be a problem for 90% of roommates, but with your luck you’d get the guy who bathes in cologne lol.

I would let the school know and try to get a single.

We should be both accepted to umich and be roommates in michigan . I am not alergic to anything but I HATE ANYTHING LIKE PERFUMES SPRAYS . Urgh! THOSE CAN ALL GO DIE.

:)

Erm, lifegr, I think Coolbreeze got waitlisted :(. Besides Michigan is on trippling roommates now so the odds of getting a single are VERY low (I believe).

^ yea i got deferred also.

:)

HAHHAHAHAHA OR ALMOST
WELL DEFER DOESNT MEAN A REJECT
IHVE SEEN THIS GUYS POSTS BEFORE AND THATS WHY I AM SAYING IT
PIGGY EYES!

DONT GET MAD

Quit calling me piggy eyes. I didn’t care at first but now it’s just really getting on my nerves. “pig” or “piggy” appears NO WHERE in my sn. Thanks.

chill on the caps bro

Lol @ romanigypsyeyes! Until you said that, I thought your name DID say piggy eyes! The power of persuasion, I guess.

There is only one g, and the p is a few letters away and out of order. romani gypsy eyes. No roaming piggy eyes or whatever.

I don’t care in general, but it’s been constant with that poster for a while despite my repeatedly asking him to quit.

Thanks for responses

Yes I was deferred at University of Michigan

Well being a freshmen in college I’ve only heard negative reveiws of having a singe. You lose out on a lot of your social life, meeting nearly as half as many people and virtually no freshmen.

I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to have air freshners etc… and other scents released in such a small living area anyway.

Because dorms smell old? Some people find the scents relaxing? Maybe they don’t like the way the roommate smells? The bathrooms could constantly smell like air freshener or cleaning agents.

My roommate sprays perfume before she leaves the room, always. All her stuff smells like her perfume, so the whole room pretty much smells like her. My boyfriends room smells like his cologne, so its not even just girls. If your allergy is that bad you’ll have to bring it up with roommate and it may not be a problem, but it very well could be.

If you tell your roommate, make sure you don’t make an enemy of your roommate later on. You may come back to a room smelling like the fragrance department of a store lol.

I see, well I definately need to alert this to my roommate. Geez… I don’t have a facebook yet but I may have to look for one on facebook in the future with the alert of my allergies. I definately can not be placed in a room that will trigger my allergies. Everyone at school seems to understand about my allergies and others with similar and is perfectly okay with such… though usually teachers prohibit spraying colognes and perfumes within the classroom but students still do it often.

As far as my sensitive skin I just mainly buy products market for such, but other chemicals that can also be found elsewhere such as fragrances I would just simply ask my roommate to never use it within the dorm. I even find myself having a hard time sitting next to someone in class with some type of cologne or perfume. I wasn’t sure if it would be a big problem but the comments I’m getting on cc seems like it could go either way.

I have crappy allergies as well (sensitive to most perfumes weird smells etc.) Just let him/her know and if they really want to spray their stuff, have them go to the community bathroom or the study lounge nearby or just away from the room…not a big deal at all. You don’t have to sacrifice a roommate just because of that. Along the same lines, don’t get mad if they forget (once in a while)

I see, okay thanks.

It could definitely be an issue. From what I’ve experienced of dorm life, lots of kids your age have issues figuring out how to achieve cleanliness for a while, and heavy fragrances are used as a mask until that’s sorted out. Even really clean people like fragrances because the “clean” smell is a reflection of their efforts.

I think it may help if you do more than your fair share of cleaning in your dorms. Of course it’d also help if you were big enough to intimidate your roommates to bend to your will.

And you’re totally screwed if you get some guido’s for roommates.
