would this be an appropriate photo

Just send in a nice picture of yourself! I can’t believe that out of a 2-year length application process (if we count APs and SATs) this is what boggles some people.

A nice picture of yourself is (in my opinion) not:

a) A facebook black and white looking-away-from-the-lens glamor shot

b) a picture of your reflection in the mirror (that’s just goddamn lazy)

c) involves a smile (what is up with high schoolers these days. That one is pretty basic)

d) Includes clothes that you would wear outside (not a bikini, not PJs, not a wife-beater if you’re a guy)

And you can even break all of these rules in the same picture and send that! This is a NON factor in your application.

Or if it’s causing you so much angst; don’t send one. It is completely optional. This isn’t a modeling competition (exhibit A: the admitted classes).

Jesus.

Look, if you really can’t find a pic just send in your senior picture or a passport photo if you have one.

Nobody ever reads the Facebook and most people look completely different in person anyways.

Is there a link to the facebook online?

No, it’s a hardcopy. You’ll get it in your orientation package. Not very useful, especially since half of the students didn’t submit photos and aren’t in there.

the picture u send in with your app is not the same picture they use in the facebook. They use the picture you send in for your ID so almost everyone is in there.

^ They def didn’t use my ID picture for my Facebook picture. I mean, if they did, then I’d be pretty screwed.

Sounds like there are three pictures that you can send in.

The first picture is the one that goes with your application, you know “Sometimes it’s helpful for us to see a face attached with an application.” Optional. I assume the OP is talking about this picture but of course, it’s entirely possible that he/she has already been admitted which brings us to…

ID Photo. All accepted students must submit this and I believe this is the one where your face needs to fill 80% of the photograph and fall into the size limitations.

Facebook photo. Columbia puts together a hardcopy of the “Facebook” and people can choose to submit a photo for inclusion. Optional. Just looking at mine, half of the people I know don’t have a picture in the Facebook.

From personal experience, I didn’t use the facebook at all. It’s easier to just go around randomly meeting people during orientation than to hardcopy Facebook-stalk and imagine meeting your classmates. Not to mention that it’s even creepier than just facebook stalking online. At least then there’s a small chance that they’ll be your “friend.”

well either way the paper “face book” has basically become obsolete given the popularity of facebook. Isn’t there an online facebook created by the columbia administration that is basically like the directory? They had started it my senior year but i’m not sure whether they ended up scrapping the idea.

i remember back in the olden days (2003) i would go home and look up people in the face book in order to remind myself of peoples’ names and guys would look through it to check out girls in the class…basically do the same things we now do online but less thoroughly. Wow talking about this makes me feel old

“Wow talking about this makes me feel old”

That’s because you are. :D

Naaaa…I’m kidding x

“didn’t use the facebook at all. It’s easier to just go around randomly meeting people during orientation than to hardcopy Facebook-stalk and imagine meeting your classmates.
Nah, I think online facebook stalking is way creepier. Because if you haven’t set your privacy settings, the person you had a 5-minute conversation with can see your entire profile, wall, photographs…

the best pictures to submit are the ones taken with the admission officers so they have both your face and and maybe the face of the person looking at your application.

HAHAHA. nice. if i was an admissions officer, i’d be so creeped out if i saw my pic while i was reviewing apps

what about a really cute 4 year old picture ?

would it be stupid to send a picture of me visiting yale ?

“what about a really cute 4 year old picture ?”

no that’s silly, they aren’t going to go “owww that’s so cute let’s take him/her”. Send a baby pic if you’re doing something cool that correlates with your life today like holding a golf club (if you’re a golfer) or beating someone up (if you’re trying to be on the wrestling team).
A kid picture also works if you’ve just done something stupid, like colored all over an expensive painting, or like grab a lighted candle and are screaming from the pain (i have a funny pic like this, didn’t send though), this category is very iffy.

“would it be stupid to send a picture of me visiting yale ?”

ow ow, you could tell them it’s actually columbia, stupid gossip girl show.

would it be stupid to send a picture of me visiting yale ?

Really? REALLY?

This may be the insider perspective but were applying students always this…urgh. Was I this bad?

Is it too cliche to have a picture on the campus.
Also what if it is with like 2 other people, though the admissions officers should recognize you.

Just put a simple senior picture of yourself. This is seriously probably has zero impact on the application outcome…
