Would this be considered a 'hook'?

Would 800+ hours of volunteer work at a school for underprivileged children (teaching them to read and write) over a span of four years be considered a hook?

Many people will tell you that hooks are things that are out of your control such as urm or legacy. This is just an ec. A really REALLY good ec. If there was ever an ec that was a hook, though, this would be it.

^ not really - its a decent/good EC but not one of those super "hook" ECs - those are very special, but im sure lots of people have very dedicated community service records, so its not as rare as a hook ec would be.

If you play it right it can be a hook, and no, hooks most of the time are NOT thinks you cant control - it always depends.

Yeah, that's what everyone tells me. Hooks are something you can't control, like your race or whether your parents went to college or not.

You can control whether or not you are a recruited athlete.

yea..........i don't think so.............

No you can't. You can control being an athlete, but it's not up to you whether they think you're good enough to be recruited.

"No you can't. You can control being an athlete, but it's not up to you whether they think you're good enough to be recruited."

Yes, you can. You can work hard every day to maximize your potential so that they have no choice but to think that you're good enough to be recruited.

you can not control being recruited....you have to get lucky enough to be scouted and even if you work your ass off doesnt mean you even be close to good enough to be recruited...Hooks most commonly are ethnicity, legacy, first generation college, recruited athlete, etc.

Actually, that's not even a great EC. That's like a good EC. (Honestly speaking.) I know lots of people who have done that amount and kind of volunteering. It doesn't really approach 'hook 'status.

Hooks are things out of your control... so what about growing up with a rare disease? Would this make an appropriate essay topic?

^^^ i don't think diseases count as hooks, but they could be interesting essay topics...

Being really good at a sport may require some luck in the genetic lottery...
