Would this be enough to rescind my acceptance?

I really messed up on my second semester senior grade.

I ended up with 1A, 2B, 1D, and an F.

1 D in ap statistics and an F in ap spanish

I was going to end up with a C- in ap spanish by turning in our final play that is worth 30% of our grade and get an A on that, but my group mate flaked out at the last moment we did terribly on the final and my grade dropped from a D+ to an F.

Absolutely terrified, I called CMU admission's office and asked if this was enough to get my rescinded, and the lady told me that they will just send a letter asking for a reply with an explanation on why I received those grades.
And when i told her I am absolutely terrified at what is happening to me right now, and she told me not to worry, and not to ruin my summer.
I was rather confused there because at UC's they automatically drop the students not meeting the required GPA on their second semester grade.

Am I getting rescinded?
I've received two C's in my high school career when I applied to CMU.

I know these threads are popping out everywhere
but I'm terrified at the damage I have caused to my transcript with my senioritis.

Any kind of help would be appreciated..

Thanks in advance

I went into senior year with a 4.0 weighted. I’m coming out with a 3.8 because I’m getting 2As 4 Bs 3 Cs. Your situation is a bit worse but think about it this way. Worrying is not going to change your grades. Just explain what happened in the letter and wait.

completely kate and I wrote some replies to students with similar concerns.

Yours is a bit worse-- and “F” is really a bad red flag.
But you said it was the second semester grade-- not the final grade. Might it pull to a D?

Can you possibly drop the class and take a “W” instead of the “F”? Your GC can help you make that case and get a parent involved-- this is one time a squeaky wheel helicopter parent might be an asset…do you have one of those at home…DROP the class- -take a W over an F!

I would call back and instead of talking to a very reassuring receptionist…call the number in your fat package for admitted students…speak to a counselor directly.

Senioritis will not be a good explanation -so do you have another more reasonable one…maybe “I had swine flu” …?? I had Severe allergies-- just couldn’t do a project worth a signficant percentage of grade …and didn’t realize how damaging it could be…
Also offer up a solution-- rather than rescind-- could they put you on probation for first semester…? could you offer to retake a course over the summer?
Be ready with an action plan …they’ll probably say no need to the plan and just put you on probation.

Unfortunately this is one case I cannot sugar coat…

Straight Cs raise eyebrows…but in all honesty -nothing usually happens. Ds and Fs…that is indeed the dreaded rescind trigger and I would continue your very open and candid line of communication (involve the GC and a parent if possible) . A helpful guidance counselor can initiate that dialogue on your behalf-- especially if your parents go in and plea for assistance…(and you might ask why should you parents want to do so-- b/c if you’re rescinded…they’re stuck with you …no one however loved wants that <smile>)</smile>

Best of luck-- we hope to see you in August!
With a few more calls and a plan…I think it will work out! Shoot for the W instead of the F-- best plan.

Yeah, I’d say you’re… kinda pushing the limit with grades like that. Worst case scenario is they call/email you and ask “*** happened” and you explain that you had a bad semester or something. But honestly, this is borderline and there’s a good likelihood that nothing at all will happen.

So i called up my private counselor and told him about my situation, and he says to get ready. There’s a very good chance of me getting rescinded, and I should start looking into finding other options, and that I should get ready mentally.

I’m having a mental breakdown (literally, I haven’t eaten/slept for past two and half days and who knows how many more days to come.)

Is there nothing else other than to writing a letter to them I can do at this point?

Plan to tell them what you told us about your Spanish grade. Other than that, I can’t see much. It’s a bummer, but… y’know, “lie in the grave you dug” and all that.

I stand by my earlier point that there’s a good likelihood CMU won’t go rescinding you and will just overlook your senior grades.

CK…and OP…I think the excuse about the Spanish grade is worse than the grade. Blaming a classmate for the poor grade on a big assignment would make me look even less favorably on a plea for leniency…I taught at university and someone coming to me with that excuse on top of a poor individual performance on tests/homework/etc. would likely be viewed as not only lazy but a whiner and snitcher. Not nice. Just stick to your performance, why you suddenly gave up the last semester…be honest…major senioritis, lazy, just burned out, fell behind in Spanish and just couldn’t catch up, …not exactly something you can cram for…If the final grade in the class is not an F then you may not have to worry so much. Our school only sends out the final grades with the final transcripts so that a low final semester with a mediocre or good first semester leads to passing grades and no need to panic…Remember, CMU is not keen to have to release a student unless they have committed a crime or hurt someone…it is costly to have to go out to the wait list…

What do you mean by “private counselor”…? At your high school or at CMU…can you clarify…a post like this can create lots of bad rumors for other students in similar situations…let’s try to have clear information please.

Thanks

I meant private counselor by a counselor that I hired privately to help me. He has lots of experience with sending students to colleges and he also had a lot of experience in dealing with situation like mine…

thanks for clarification.

Wishing you the best

Still think you can offer to be placed on probation at CMU and also offer to retake spanish if that would be acceptable. A plan on your end can go a long way to soothing CMU concerns.

So what exactly happened? Did this person get rescinded? Would be curious to know
