I was just curious if it is possible to work part time as a specialized surgeon (probably spinal or orthopedic) and also be able to work as a virologist doing HIV research.

I always wanted to be a doctor but I have a new interest in research so im wondering if its possible to combine them

Bump!!
Any input at all?

part time surgeon and research in HIV on the side? those are two entirely different things, but yes it is possible. you’ll probably need a phd/md program to do both. being realistic though, you won’t end up doing that. i guarantee it. also, if you’re not even in med school yet, i guarantee your interests will change completely by the time you apply for residency

almost certainly not possible to combine those interests unless between now and when this would apply we discover some major link between HIV and spinal disease that required people who were skilled in both. And even then, it would still be a very specialized niche that would be extremely hard to get into.
