I’m only a junior but have been thinking about this for a while. One of my hobbies I have passionate about since I was like seven, and I am a moderator on one of the bigger online forums for it. There around maybe 40 moderators in total, though about half are inactive, having not posted in years. I am also the youngest moderator ever on the forum. The forum has more than 75,000 members in total, so fairly large. I will usually spend at least an hour a day on it, so it is a big commitment in my life. When I eventually apply for college, would this be something noteworthy to put in the extracurriculars section or elsewhere? Or would admissions officers not care whatsoever?
What is the subject of the forum? If it’s chat, gaming or a fan site, probably not, unless your going for computer engineering. If it’s peer counseling or a philanthropic endeavor, then yes. Can you give us more info without giving it away? And what have you done to grow and/or develop new ideas there?
Oh yeah its aquarium related. So a lot of peer assistance in helping care for livestock, assistance on how to setup and maintain aquariums, and discussing new methods to improve ocean sustainability and how to improve husbandry methods (both which we often require recent scientific research for support).
I think that’s a very worthwhile EC, @connorp. I would use it. Good luck.
Oh, by all means yes, then!
I don’t know if I’d say it’s a “big commitment”…wouldn’t you be spending that one hour browsing the forums even if you weren’t moderating? Definitely include it, but I personally would put it near the bottom in importance.
@bodangles , not necessarily. Moderators are expected to try and look through each new thread (maybe 100 a day) to make sure no one is out of line. So definitely more of a time commitment now.
I wouldn’t put it at the bottom, @connorp. The topic is an excellent one, especially if you want to major in one of the sciences.
Hopeful physics major, so yeah, definitely interested in the sciences.
