Would this benefit my chances of getting into a good college? (Language courses)

I’m a sophomore currently, I took Spanish 1 in middle school, Spanish 2 in Freshman year, and I’m currently taking Spanish 3. Would taking French 1 and French 2 in the final 2 years of high school make me look better to colleges or would it just be point less?

Since you’d be starting another romance language, it’d not look pointless, but rather odd, especially if your school offers Spanish classes beyond Spanish III.

I wouldn’t recommend doing it. If you wish to switch languages and your school offers a non-romance language, perhaps you could switch into that instead.

Basically every college that asks for foreign language preparation asks that it be in the same language. If the OP wants to study a 2nd FL, and continue on with Spanish that’s fine. Would it “look better?” Well, it won’t look worse, but it’s certainly not any type of advantage.

Only add a second foreign language because you want to. The more important/impressive thing for colleges would be to continue to the highest possible level of Spanish. For example, don’t opt out of Spanish 4 so you can take French 2.

It is generally more favorable to reach the highest level in one language rather than lower levels in more languages. I.e. after completing Spanish 3, it is more favorable to take Spanish 4 and 5 instead of French 1 and 2.

Taking French 1 and 2 as academic electives in addition to Spanish 4 and 5 can be useful if you have a strong interest in the languages.

Thanks guys. This was something that I thought of the other night and was curious.

My school does offer AP Spanish, but nothing past that. My plan is to finish this year in Spanish 3, and depending on how this year went I’ll decide whether or not to continue. If I do continue, I’ll just French I in my final year.
