I'm a junior in high school. If I have a decent GPA (4.2 W/3.9 UW, approximately) and I've got all A's or A-'s and one B+, but one C, would that ruin my application?

My dream school is UVa, but I'm really worried they won't take me because of that C.

No it will not. Actually, it depends on what class its in. But im almost positively sure you will be a shooin for uva.

One C probably won’t kill you. It certainly doesn’t look good, but it won’t throw you out of the running to get accepted.

a) what class is it in?
b) can you bring it up?

Keep trying in other classes and try to bring it up, you’re still in the running! :)

First, very rarely can your application be “ruined” by anything (unless you’re talking about something like committing a felony or something =p).

Nevertheless, while your application is far from ruined, C’s can have a decent-sized impact at top schools, although keep in mind it depends on the class your C is in. If you got your C in a easy class, like non-honors Geometry or English 11 or what-have-you, colleges might not like that too much. But they’ll be much more understandable if you get that C in a hard class, say an AP/IB class, a dual-enrollment class, or a high-level honors class.

But anyways, don’t dwell too much on the C. Just use your C as motivation to work harder and to make sure you continue to get all A’s :)

Bookworm934: It’s in AP Calculus BC. I could probably bring it up to a B- but anything beyond that seems unlikely right now.

But thanks for the advice, everyone!

A C won’t ruin your application. I got a C in AB Physics freshman year. My first C on a report card My councilor told me that a C won’t kill me, I just have to work harder, and put more effort.
