Hi Parents,
It's been years since I've been on CollegeConfidential! I recently came across a link to a very important matter on private schools and politics. My friend passed me down this link about a young girl named Connie who has been affected by college competition of extreme vengeance.

I think the petition and video present one side of the story. As much as I feel terrible that the young woman suffered such severe injuries, I wouldn’t sign a petition based on such limited information.

as a parent, i think i would be a little concerned if I thought that school officials tried to murder my daughter, and that local police were not trying to investigate the matter thoroughly. i don’t think a single parent here wouldn’t be. however, of course there should be more research done. the most disturbing part outside of the young woman’s car wreck is the fact that the investigation was abruptly aborted. even if it was just an accident and there was no conspiracy, such a lackluster investigation makes it seem suspicious in and of itself.

I find it very difficult to believe that the school would deliberately not send her transcripts. This would require a conspiracy, presumably between the office staff and the swim coach and/or parent of her rival.

On the other hand, stranger things have happened.

The way the investigation was dropped is bizarre. Even if the police officer was told by the college counselor that Connie’s father was a paranoid nutcase, wouldn’t the police at least have the car and scene examined?

Filing suit – like most suits, it was filed right before the statute of limitations expired. There were probably settlement negotiations of some sort prior to filing. The suit doesn’t really reflect the father’s theory at all, but he probably hopes that it gives him an opportunity to get discovery against the school and thus maybe to come up with more evidence.

Investigation – We don’t know that the investigation was really cut short at all. All the video says is that the police only talked to one person on the Hopkins School campus – not that they failed to talk to other people as well. And of course it doesn’t say whether the police agreed with the family’s expert that the crash was caused by a deliberately slashed tire. I’ll bet there is another side to that argument. Also, even if we accept that a tire was slashed deliberately, there is probably no evidence that the slasher anticipated that the tire would fail while being driven, as opposed to going flat in the parking lot. That would mean that the highest provable charge would probably be a misdemeanor – something very few police departments would devote a lot of resources to.

Holding transcripts – I have no trouble believing that the school’s main office held back transcripts if the coach asked them to. There’s probably a lot more to this story, too. What’s really hard to believe is that anyone slashed a kid’s tires over this.

One of mine was a high level swimmer who was recruited for college. In any competitive situation, you do get some nut cases. In this case, I don’t really see enough evidence to investigate. How can you catch someone who vandalized your car?

I am assuming the cut was deliberate as verified by experts. I can tell you that I had a similar cut on my tire, and I don’t think any one was out to get me. I noticed that the tire was low, almost immediately and had to pull over, get AAA to tow the car to a station and replace the tire.

If the environment were that unfriendly and dangerous anywhere for my child, I would remove him/her. End of matter. Perhaps the Chens have been told that a civil suit can reap some benefits and actions so they are going through this. I don’t think I would bother unless it were truly an issue.

It is possible someone slashed the tires. Kids do vandalize. Not sure if the person who did it could be caught. If the police investigated every such situation, we would need to have a lot more police. They have trouble putting in the time on cases where there is a real shot in catching the perpetrator.

Did a little googling on the subject and found that the young lady was seriously injured in the accident. Cognitive and physical abilities are compromised. Very sad situation, and I can see now why the parents are going after the school.

if someone did slash her tires, it is a little disingenous to portray it as only vandalism considering that she could have died. of course there’s certainly more to the other side of story, but that doesn’t mean that the allegations themselves aren’t serious!

The story as presented in the video doesn’t make sense to me. It is a little hard to believe there was some conspiracy against Connie that involved the swim coach and the administration and the police. It’s interesting, maybe I’ll see what else I can find out about it.
