Excellence in Physical Science award.
Excellence in Algebra II award.
Excellence in Geometry award.
Excellence in Spanish III award.

I have also taken Pre-Calculus, Russian 2, and Russian 3 at the local community college.

good enough test scores but you need a higher uc gpa and its seems like more ap classes/more rigorous senior year. ucla is a reach for you

Here’s the magic formula to getting into UCLA: Perfect/Near perfect unweighted GPA. That’s the only thing your application is lacking.

Hmm. GPA is kind of tough =/ What if my SAT score was around a 2250? Would that balance things up a tad bit more?

edit: + I’m taking Russian 4 next semester. I also go to a very rigorous Catholic High School

bumpity–can anyone else put there input into this?

Are you a resident of the state of California? If so, I believe you have around a 55%-60% chance of getting in.

EDIT: LOL did not notice the CSF

This may be an ignorant comment, but how is a 4.04 not a perfect GPA?
I thought the UC GPA was out of 4.0…

UC GPA is certainly not out of 4.0, rather it is adding a maximum of 8 extra points for ap or honors courses taken to an otherwise unweighted GPA calculation.

I think your GPA is okay. You did not specify your AP Scores, however the AP tests look a little weak to your future major. Also, the awards you listed look like your school thing, and your volunteer hours are not much ( 20 hours here and there means you only did service a few times). You should try to volunteer in one place and gain more hours there this summer. And, try to move up your math score more in SAT1 and SAT2 Bio to have 750. NHS can be your award.

I have a 3.9 UW GPA by the way. Any ideas on what else I can do besides bolster up my SAT score?

“Volunteered at local hospital for 20h”

do you mean 20 hours a week?

Oh my just noticed the 20 hours. It is supposed to be 200 >.<

I think UCLA is a reach because you’re a bio major which is definitely one of the most popular majors and therefore very competitive for admissions. Your SAT-I is probably average for a competitive UCLA applicant though your chances will definitely be boosted if you get a higher SAT (most bang for your buck/time in improving your chances). Your UC GPA is pretty low which is what makes your app more mediocre. The ECs look ok for UCLA.

Considering you got a 780 on Math II by doing a bunch of practice tests you should definitely be able to bump your math SAT I score by quite a lot (what I did was pretty much do one math SATI practice test a day for 2 weeks=more than enough practice and bumped up my score from 720ish to 800). Practice really does make perfect for the Math SATs (My first Math II was 680 with barely any studying but by taking a ton of practice tests I got 800 the 2nd time).

I’m guessing your a senior so good luck and get cracking on those essays now! :)

You should continue your service hrs and try to take some more vigorous classes. A high GPA means nothing if admissions doesn’t think you challenged yourself.
As for awards, nationally recognized awards such as CSF, NSHSS, AP Scholars, and etc. will probably get you more brownie points than awards specific to your school or district

Thanks, I will keep these in mind!
@peta I guess I will be applying as undeclared.

Don’t apply undeclared. Apply to an obscure major that your grades/AP scores would hint at you being strong in and easily just switch to whatever you want when you get in. For example, if you got A’s in Psychology AP and got a 5 on it apply as a psychobiology major and switch to whatever you want after you get in. You want to give them a hint that you are strong in the major you selected. UCLA maintains that major is not important toward freshman admission, but that is a total exaggeration.

Good luck.
