Would you ever choose any other school over Harvard?

Would you (excepting Yale/Princeton/MIT obsessions)? Call this an idiotic question, if you would like, but I intend it to be quite frank.

Many do. Harvard’s yield is not 100%. It hovers around 80% - which is the highest in the nation, but it also means that every year about 400 accepted applicants chose another school over Harvard.

I didn’t apply to Harvard(because I wasn’t interested) but even if I was accepted I would have picked Rice(over any other school also). Rice is my perfect fit(if there is such a thing). I wish that more prospies would pick a school on fit rather than prestige but of course choosing on prestige will always be the case in our status run society.

Although of course Harvard is the perfect fit for some ppl, I doubt that Harvard is the “perfect fit” for the ~80% that accept admission

i would have always picked harvard. absolutely no matter what.

Possibly Cambridge/Oxford?

Or maybe MIT/Princeton/Caltech for something math/science related?

Or maybe money is an issue and they chose scholarships at state schools?

I was willing to go to Berkeley over Harvard. Not having been accepted into Harvard anyways, I did not need to actually make the decision.

I’m actually deliberating that question right now…I have a full-ride at a small, highly ranked (Forbes ranked it #1 college in South) liberal arts school in my home state, where I could play on a varsity sport…or Harvard, where I would have to take out some loans…but it’s HARVARD!

Since you forgot to include Stanford, I would choose Stanford over Harvard.

^seconding

I would choose Duke, Stanford or Yale over Harvard

To Jersey13, I probably should have listed Stanford as well, but I guess I was subconsciously assuming that geographically, West Coast kids would prefer Stan and East would prefer Harvard. I mentioned Yale/MIT/Princeton because they are among the most intense obsessions for Easterners. Of course, I could be seriously misled in this thinking.

My D said she wanted to go to a whole bunch of other colleges over Harvard, until she actually got admitted to Harvard. Then she didn’t even apply anywhere else. (She was admitted to the last EA class).

As for me I could choose Princeton,Columbia over Harvard. But I love Harvard is one of my top choices:D

I luuurve MIT. If I go to Harvard, it will be to save $$$. But I don’t count, I guess, since I’m in the listed exclusions.

Harvard (or any of the HYPSM) >>>> Oxbridge

I’m from the UK but applying to the US b/c of this…

I didn’t apply to Harvard cus I wanted to go to Rice or MIT. (so, yeah, I would.)

Actually, if I was to do a HYPSM ranking it’d be:

MIT, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton… so yup :p.

I would chose Columbia, Brown or Yale over Harvard.

I also know someone who chose NYU over Harvard.

I’ve got a Harvard offer and a Cambridge offer (Kings if that makes any difference) and from the UK. Finaid means the costs are about the same. It’s a strange choice. I’m leaning towards Harvard cus, among other things, it’s an oppurtunity that nobody I know has ever had. Both are amazing schools and I know I’d have a great next few years whatever my decision. One is pretty close to home, one is an ocean away - so I guess it’s more of a personal choice to take a risk and be somewhere unfamiliar than an objective ‘A is better than B’ choice.

Stanford, no doubt.

This has been my experience too. I’ve found that most people, when actually faced with the decision end up choosing Harvard (despite anything that may have been said earlier).
