Would you go to UNLV or APU?

I live in Las Vegas, and this Fall I basically have two choices. Azusa Pacific University in California, or UNLV (which is 15 mins. from my house).

I want that traditional college experience and I'm afraid I won't get that at a commuter school like UNLV. But at the same time I'm really scared to move out and live by myself in a place where I don't know anyone. I applied for campus housing at UNLV, so that I could live by my parents and friends - but still be a part of the campus life.

Where do you think the better choice would be? APU has small class sizes, and I've been going to a private Christian high school for the past four years, so I feel like I'd relate to people better...and feel more at home at a place like APU.

Either way I'm transferring to a better school after two years. So just on that note, where would be an easier place to transfer from?

And any other thoughts?

Please help me!

I wouldn’t go to any college in Las Vegas if my life depended on it. I stopped by UNLV when I was in Vegas for Speech Nationals and…

shudder

Oh.

I didn’t think the campus was THAT bad. But there are hobos prowling around…my friend got chased by one when she went to an advising meeting a few months ago. :(

But I still can’t pick, anyone have any advice?

I would choose UNLV, as it’s stronger in engineering and math. But it depends on what you want.

Why can’t you go to UNR?

Since your location says Azusa and you sound like you want to go there it should really be a no brainer.

I would get out of Nevada. Can’t you go to some of the Arizona state schools with tuition reciprocity with Nevada? I would look into that.

^ Seconded.

I applied to UNR, but never finished my application. I know it’s a good school. But I don’t think it’s a good fit. I’m not so into the cold weather, hard partying, and big state school vibe. I know UNLV’s a big university too, but I’m right at home here in Las Vegas so it’s not as bad.

I really do want to go to Azusa, there’s just so many things I’m worried about. Like not making friends there and losing the ones I have here - so then I come back for the summer and I’m completely alone. And I’m worried that it’ll be harder to transfer from Azusa since it’s not as well-known.

My major’s undeclared so I can’t even choose which one would have a better program for what I’m doing. :(

Anymore opinions?

If you feel great in Las Vegas stay there. If you don’t, go to Azusa.

I think you answered your own question, quite frankly: “I really do want to go to Azusa”. I understand your worries, but those are normal for anyone going off to college. I am a rising senior, however the majority of my friends are rising college freshmen :(. All of these friends are terrified that they will go to college, make no friends, then come home and find all their friends have moved on. That simply isn’t the case. They all went to orientation and came back with at least 6 or 7 friends to speak of, all of whom they knew by name. I think you’re struggling to break from your comfort zone. Las Vegas is your comfort zone, but Azusa is where you want to go. I am from Massachusetts, and my aunt attended Boston University. She has always told me that she wanted to go farther away from her hometown (In Massachusetts) for college, but she couldn’t muster up the courage. It’s one of the biggest regrets of her life. Don’t make that mistake; go where you want to go, and don’t be afraid. It will all work out in the end, I promise.
