<p>My mother was first proposed to by a gentleman who, in her words "had money coming out of his eyeballs". She turned him down. She married my father, an immigrant and self-made man. (Though she turned him down the first time, too.) They have been married for nearly 30 years now. </p>
<p>The only sort of marriage that is stupid is one that is not carefully considered. If people paid half as much attention to their relationship as they did to their wedding, the divorce rate in this country would be much, much lower.</p>
