Would you pick UCSD over UCB for bioengineering?

UCB is ranked high in engineering, but UCSD in bioE. How do they compare in terms of quality of education and jobs/grad school opportunities? Are other engineering majors 'much weaker' at UCSD?

Average UCB admittee is "numerically more qualified." does that mean UCSD curriculum/expectations in engineering and bioE are relatively softer and not as rigorous as those at UCB? (similar thread posted at UCB board)

UCB doesn’t have credential in bioengineering. It is wasting time and money

Yes I have a friend who chose UCSD over UCB for bioengineering. They’re supposed to be ranked second in the nation for that particular type of engineering.

any ucsd bioE grads out there or know of? i would like to know about the focus of the undergrad program. is it geared towards biotech industry or more science/theory based to prepare for grad school.

There are three different bioE majors. I’m not a bioE major, but I know plenty who chose UCSD because of bioE.

it would be helpful to know where the BioE graduates generally end up - mostly industry or grad school. is there such data available from the department?

career.ucsd.edu

You should be able to find some relevant, useful information on that site.

this is all second-hand: i’ve heard that there are a lot of bioengineering companies around UCSD and it’s quite easy to get hired by local companies before you even graduate. it’s one of the few majors with which you can land a job straight out of school. i think most bioeng graduates end up working in industry. try this link:

[Survey of Recent UCSD Graduates](Alumni)

whenever i hear people talking about ucsd, they often mention how its bioeng is even higher ranked than Berkeley’s. that’s a pretty vague, shallow thing to say but it’s the best i have to offer. so, it seems the general consensus is that ucsd is “better” for bioeng. if you happen to be choosing between the two, i really recommend you pick the school you like better. it seems that both programs are excellent and unless one is much more appealing than the other, i think factors like how much you like the school should actually take precedence.

^thanks for the link. i’m surprised how few BioE’s are represented in the survey.

since you touched the topic, how is UCB campus scene is different from UCSD’s. i get the sense that UCSD is spread out and lacking school spirit.
