Would you rather have your class rank reported as exact or decile?

Hey there! My school doesn't rank, but I am in the top decile. So when my counselor fills the application out it will say that I am in the top 10%. My exact rank is known and it's 19/598. I'm applying to top schools (think Princeton) and I'm wondering if I should have my counselor mention that I am 19 in her rec letter or just leave it to say top 10%. Is being ranked 19/598 at a public school that only sometimes sends 1 or 2 students to the lower level ivies (cornell, dartmouth) a disadvantage or an advantage or neutral when it comes to applying to schools like Princeton?

I guess what I'm asking is if 19 is good enough to report? Will colleges with my top 10% ranking assume in val or will they assume i'm ranked 59?

Certain top schools consider (and report) top 5% and even top 1%. I think it’s worth mentioning.

but my counselor showed me her school forms on the common app and showed me that the highest classification was by decile? Anniezz, where do they report it?

Well, if you are at 9% or 19% from the top, you’d rather see deciles. If you are 1%, 11%, or 21% from the top, you’d rather see percentage ranks. If you are 1 or 2, you’d want to see the number of the ranking.

Yes, but I’m in the top 4% at a non competitive public school applying to schools that most accept valedictorians… so would I rather want to see deciles in that case?

Where does your counselor report it? I dont know if there’s a way to report it other than by rank on the CA, or she would put it in remarks. You could ask your admissions rep at the college.
