This is an absolutely ridiculous dilemma. You are extremely lucky if this represents the significance of your average issue. I would never consider not taking a class simply because I am not a “morning person,” stop being lazy and consider yourself lucky to even have the opportunity to take such a class. It would seem that your priorities are a bit mixed up, considering you are willing to weigh personal comfort against interesting and therefore intellectually beneficial classes.

I mean, I agree, but come on - I remember being in college. 8:30 felt like the crack of dawn at that time. Anything earlier than 11 am felt too early, lol. Now, I’m an early riser - I wake up between 7 and 7:30 every morning, and sleeping in late to me is like 10 am. If I sleep past 11 am I feel like I’ve wasted the day.

Anyway, I’d take the 8:30 class. If it’s interesting, you’ll be alert. Just make sure to get 8 hours of sleep - so go to bed early the day before, at around 11 or 12. When I had an early class in college, I rolled out of bed, threw on a sweatshirt and went to class, then came back to sleep.

I am an early rise anyways, but id take the interesting class anyways

All in one day, or do you mean over the course of a week?

:)

I’m torn to be honest. I’m not a morning person by any means. I take a good 15 minutes or longer to be functional and get going, before that I’m sluggish and…zombie like. Waking up for a class at 8:30 or before is torture to me but it can be done. If I plan ahead and not stay up working all night. Which as we know isn’t always possible. But having an interesting class makes it much much easier to be functional and alive for class.

I would probably have to go with the early class then. I can wake myself up early and show up with a giant cup of tea and enjoy the class since its something I enjoy. I’ve done the early morning non enjoyable classes and hated it.

The later class, most likely. Fortunately, all of the classes I wanted to take this Fall are in the evening. However, they all are at the same times, so I could only take 3 of them.

I’ve found a lot of my teachers aren’t morning people either. Thankfully. XD

The worst is when you have a boring class in the morning… absolute worst. That said, some teachers can make a class frustratingly bad regardless of it being 8am or 3pm.

I hate going to bed before 1-2am (dunno why), and even if I feel like a zombie getting out of bed at 6:30am (I like 2 hours to shower/shave/commute/WAKE UP), the worst part to me is dealing with the parking mess at 8am. For some reason kids in the other majors love to start their class at 8am and thus it’s always impossible to get parking that early.

I would go for the 8:30, but I’m used to working in a sleep deprived state (my high school started at 7:10, if you got there after 7:20 you were late, but no one really started teaching until 7:30. Then i did 6 years of academic camp where class started at 8:30-9:00, that was a respite compared to high school)

OH heavens! 8:30 class for sure! You’ll be falling asleep during the ‘bleh’ class anyways! Interesting class will keep you awake and you’ll actually be intrigued! If you like something, you’ll do better in it!!! No doubt about it! And thennn… you have later in the day to do other things!.. like homework… ;)

I took a “boring” class later in the day, and it was SO hard for me to stay awake even at a decent hour. I’d pick the interesting morning class any day over the boring one. Trust me, it’s not worth it!

I much prefer 8 30 classes and I can be a bit of a night owl. Yes, the waking up/getting ready part sucks but once you get to class it feels better then being in class later in the day. Plus it’s what the class is that matters more, not what time its at. In fall i have a MWF 8:30-9:50 class and can’t wait.

8:30 all the way. And yes, I am writing this at 5:40 in the morning.

Honestly, the ‘blah’ class. Unless the first class is SO unique that it’s not likely to be taught again, it’s not worth it. And I’m a morning person. I wake up every day at 6:30am to workout, but getting up to go to class is another story. And it’s 10x worse if I’m hungover :p

I have a feeling you’ll end up going with the 10 o’clock class, but the beauty of college classes is that you can give it a test run, and drop the class if it doesn’t work out.

I would take the interesting class. I did it my freshman year (took an interesting class at 8 AM) and because it was interesting, I did better than if I had taken something else later.

the earlier it is…the more likely you are to skip. When the snooze button starts to call you name, it doesn’t matter how “interesting” the class is.

To me it depends… Mostly on if I haft to commute. I’d love to take a interesting 8:30a class, if I’m leaving on campus at the time. Thus I can roll out of bed a quarter till 8 and take a nice stroll to class. As opposed to having to virtually leave my house an hour early, fight morning traffic, find a parking spot, walk fast to class. The hassle to me isn’t worth it, unless its a class I REALLY haft to take. I will likely have a rough first week adjusting my sleeping cycle, but it will catch on. Heres to the interesting early morning class…pending commuting.

Never eat a heavy lunch right before a BLEH afternoon class:

Carb Crash + Total Lack of Interest = (actual) Zzzzzzzz

If you find yourself in this unfortunate predicament: at the beginning of class, ask someone to smack you out of your snores, should you succumb. Maybe provide a candy bar or a soda for payment, if necessary.

For sure the 830, for one you will be motivated cause you are interested in subject matter, second it might get you on a earlier schedule which you may discover you appreciate. Stop staying up so late :)

I’m tired all the time anyways. I’d rather be tired early in the morning rather than later that day.

I really think it depends on how well you function at the earlier hour. My son - on two occasions - has had to drop very interesting morning classes because he’s just plain not functional until 10.
