Would you rather take an interesting 8:30 class or potentially bleh later class?

I’m a morning person anyway, so I’d definitely go for the 8:30. I have an 8 AM class four out of the five days of the week-Calculus and Chemistry. Knowing my classes will be tougher than high school, I’m motivated to grip every concept and spend afternoons deepening my understanding of every one of my subjects.

The real question is, “would you rather take a boring afternoon class (1-2:05pm) or an interesting late night class once a week (6-8:30)”

I wouldn’t say I’m a morning person per se, but when forced to get up early, I don’t have a problem with being sleepy like many of my friends do. I have an 8:00 Oral Communication class (it’s required) on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9:00 Calc III on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The only thing I’m worried about is not having time before class to get last-minute work done because I’m quite the procrastinator! Wish me luck!

I know you’ve probably already decided by now, but to be fair, you have no way of knowing for sure whether the 10:45 class is actually going to be boring or if the summary just makes it sound that way; I’d recommend looking up both teachers as well on Rate My Professors or something just to see what they might add to the mix.

Also, one can’t assume that boring = unhelpful. Arguably Organic Chem, Shakespearean Literature, 17th Century European Philosophy, American History, Accounting, etc., are all sometimes boring (or can be), but necessary to certain majors.

Yes, it’s possible you’d be missing out on a great opportunity by opting out of the 8:30 class, but comparing the teachers and then trying to find out more about the classes from past students or by e-mailing said teachers is the effective way to find out.

And of course it’s more “mature” or “pragmatic” or whatever to choose the most enriching class regardless of time, but there are certainly some people like myself who really do, whether it’s a psychosomatic response to knowing how early it is or what, feel unimaginably damn terrible in the morning. This sounds stupidly melodramatic but I do some amateur writing in my free time and I’m relying on the early-morning horror to describe the feelings of a crack addict character. x)

Not that I’ve chosen my time slots wisely, either. I actually opted to take the same class at 9:30 instead of 2:30 since otherwise I would be getting up around noon or 1 each day of the week and didn’t want to get myself in that rut…or embarrass myself all year in front of my best friend slash roommate, who according on her schedule would come back around that time and find me still sleeping.

Basically, don’t worry about it too much, if one of the classes was some sort of miracle ideal environment bringing its students to tears daily you probably would have heard about it already. ;P

I would take it early in the morning. That way it’s out of the way and done with. I’m a bit more attentive in the mornings, but that’s just me. I dread classes that late in the day ( >_< ) That’s a study/work out hour lol If not that, lol.

One of my best classes ever (intro computer sci by a professor who demonstrated musical effects he created and showed us how to modify them with code) was at 8:00 AM and I commuted 2 hours every day. Woke up at 5 AM, and my last class ended at 10:00 PM, so I got home around midnight and slept for 4-5 hours max. Too tired to drive a couple times so I just napped in the car then changed my clothes and another day at school.

I was on meds for thyroid disease and felt like crap the entire time too. If you like something you like it.

Oh wait I just saw that both of the OP’s classes are by the same professor.

99% of the time in my experience, the professor determines how interesting the class is more than the course ID (assuming it’s all the same general subject).

I would take the earlier interesting class, though some classes I’ve had that seemed like they would be “bleh” turned out to be some of the most interesting I’ve ever taken.

Go for the 8:30 class. If you are really interested it won’t matter what time it is. I had a TV class in high school from 7:45-9:15 and I learned a lot because I was genuinely interested. It didn’t matter that it was early. What matter was how I thought about the class.

an interesting 8:30 class… if it’s a good class, it wouldn’t be so annoying waking up for it, and it would be easier to stay awake in an interesting 8:30 class than in a less interesting 10:45 class

Classic freshman response haha. I woke up at 5:30 every day in high school–doesn’t make 8:30 any less brutal in college.

I’d say the “bleh” later class, for a few reasons: (1) whether you like a class depends on more than the content, and you’re likely to be frustrated if your grades suffer because you never show up/aren’t functional; (2) your other classes will suffer if you don’t get enough sleep; (3) class descriptions aren’t always a good indicator of which courses will be interesting anyway.

I like late classes better.
