Would you RETAKE a 2300 with a bad math score?

So this past October SAT Test, I took the test and here is the breakdown of each section:

Critical Reading: 770 (3 Wrong)
Writing: 790 (11 on Essay)
Math: 740 (2 Wrong)

Seeing that many colleges disregard writing, I’m upset that my math would look weak compared to the other sections.

Do you think it’s worth it to try for a better math score?

No. Anything above a 2200 is not worth retaking imo. I suggest you focus on other parts of your application at this time.

It depends what schools you are applying to, and how good your scores have to be for those schools. If this is the first time you took it, take it one more time and see what happens. You can take it again knowing your existing scores are very good, and you have nothing to lose by retaking.

I would say no now.
However, I retook a 34 composite ACT because of a 30 in math, leaving me little room to talk.

Where are you applying? What proposed major?

My proposed path is to take Business and Computer Science.

I’m really debating this because tomorrow will be the last day to register for the December SAT, and subsequently the last chance for SAT Scores to be sent to RD Schools.

Only at Cal Tech is that 740 not AT LEAST in the middle 50%ile. If you’re applying to Cal Tech, retake. Otherwise sleep in on that Saturday

Not worth retaking in my opinion unless you are applying to a rigorous engineering program, which you it doesn’t seem like you are. A 740 is very respectable.

The middle 50th % Math scores for admitted students at MIT are 750-800 and 740-800 for Cornell Engineering.

Generally speaking, and of course this varies by school and program, but CS admission standards are often higher than business admission standards.

@CT1417 So, you’re saying that retaking it is favorable?

It’s an impossible call. Realistically, it is silly to entertain retaking a 2300 but if your math score is at or below the 25th % of admitted students, then I would have to give it a shot. You have to imagine that some of those who scored in the bottom quartile are hooked applicants (athletic recruits). Assuming you are an unhooked applicant, you would want your scores to be on par with your competition.

But, really, what do I know!

@CT1417 , thanks for the advice! I’m looking to apply to NYU Stern.

@anxiousenior1 Thanks for your reply and advice!

@“Erin’s Dad” , Yes, fortunately, Caltech is not in my list of colleges. Thanks for your reply and advice!

@peytonmg , Got it. Thanks so much!

I don’t think a 740 is considered a ‘low’ math score unless you plan on going into physics or engineering. Also, if youre applying for a school that doesn’t participate in super scores, you probably shouldn’t risk getting lower than a 2300 unless you’re very confident in your reading/crit skills.

@xoxocatz , ok, appreciate your input!

bump last time

@IBGuy101 , got it. Thanks for your advice!
