Would you retake a 4?

I know some people in my school are retaking my country's national exam to get an A since they got a B the first time round.

I was wondering, would any of you retake a 4 (in any subject) to get a 5, just as how my classmates are retaking a B?

Although I would have loved to retake my 4s as well and make them a 5, I think retaking it might come across to adcoms as overeager and might have a negative effect, kinda like taking SATs too many times.

There is no reason to retake it unless your college requires a 5 for credit. Even so I would bet that it would very difficult to improve your score a year later and without taking the course again.

no way
a 4 is essentially just as good as a 5, unless you hold some irrational stock in the subjective review of someone you don’t even know.

I would. 10charheehee

I second that.^ For me getting a 5 is a real achievement and when I get a four in some sort of weird way I think I’ve failed.

When I got my 1st four, I wanted to retake it too. But in the long run, it’s not going to be a big deal. A four is a terrific score and there’s no sense in redoing it.

@ dylandlima - I thought my first 5 was a “real achievement” as well. After you get a bunch though, they just lose meaning. What exactly are you achieving - scoring over 65% on a standardized exam that you crammed for? Or, you’re off a couple of %'s and get a 4. It’s not a big deal. Don’t make it one.

I would not retake a 4. Rather, if the 4 were in a class I’d study in college, I would just study the material a little more to have a more solid foundation. In the scheme of things, though, having one 4 on one’s college application is negligible.

Right on.

Then would you all retake a 3? 2 and 1 usually go for rescoring so never mind about that.

Interesting to see what people in CC say…

^ I wouldn’t retake an AP exam, period.

I would, and did, for most of my 4s. It’s just not as satisfying as a 5.

It’s not as satisfying, granted, but I personally feel one’s time could be better spent doing other things. Like perusing College Confidential.

^ Oh yeah. That’s the way.

No I would not retake a 4. Or a 3, for that matter. I’m sure I would retake a 1 or 2 though.

Lets say you took AP Calc exam sophomore year… If you retook the test (Junior Year) would colleges know?

I’m with An0maly. I would retake any other test (SAT II, etc.) but not an AP.

I would probably retake a 4, but only if it were on an embarrassingly easy test (i.e. AP US Gov, AP Psych). I got a 4 as a slacker in APUSH sophomore year and on Calc AB and Chem this year. I am ashamed of none of these.

I got 4s on both of my AP exams. I would not retake AP Lang because that was what I expected and that was the level I was performing at. However, I would totally retake APUSH. It’s more pride issues than anything else. I could do better, I could get a five, but I didn’t get a five and others did. It does annoy me very much.

NO OMG It’s not a big deal! A four is a really fantastic grade! If you’re upset that you aren’t getting college credit, suck it up and get over it. You’re not going to be the only one who has to take that class in college and you may end up really loving it.

In my opinion, the only reason you would ever retake it is for credit purposes where you needed a higher score for the school of your choice. Most of the time it would be too late… as you get acceptances in late april/may… but I guess if you’re rich you could pay for the exam just in case and not take it if you don’t accepted into the school you’re retaking it for.

Either way unless you get below a 3, retaking it is kinda needy and sad and shows you didn’t try as hard you should’ve the first time or got too much workload.
