Would you still enroll in Berkeley if

you have admission offers from any of these schools:

Emory
Vanderbilt
Notre Dame
Rice
Washington U@StL
Chicago

Yes. But I’m not you.

Also depends on major - what are you planning to study?

computer science

I mean, I have friends who rejected many of those for Berkeley EECS, one who rejected Columbia.

Really the only one of those that I personally would consider is UChicago, which I have quite a liking for. Then again, that has a lot to do with the math department being comparably strong to ours :)

Yeah I would go to Berkeley for cs over those schools

Yes b/c I get instate tuition. Plus, I love the city of Berkeley (probably more so than the university).

For CS, Berkeley hands down. No question.

For CS, definitely Berkeley. The only schools I would choose over Berkeley for CS are Stanford and MIT. Even though I hate the city of Berkeley (much more so than the university) ;)

Only school I’d choose over Berkeley for CS is MIT…Not even 'furd. Why? Dave Patterson. If not, then Christos Papadimitriou :)

For certain other majors and programs, I’d seriously consider Rice and Chicago over Berkeley, emphasis on Chicago.

But for Comp Sci, Berkeley is one of the best–you can’t go wrong.

Depends on what my financial aid package looks like at those universities. For an undergraduate liberal arts major, such as myself, I would be more likely to pick the place that I feel best at.

^ cost would come out the same for all those schools.

I turned down Chicago for Berkeley, but that was due to costs.

I’ll get back to your question. I have to think about it.

Yes, especially so, if I was CS.

I might consider UChicago if they offered me a lot of money.

^ I said cost would be the same for all schools.

D has (will have) a similar dilemma. A few years ago this would have been a no brainer, but the budget cuts in California will exact a heavy price from the UC system, including Berkeley and UCLA, so, probably if the money worked out most of those schools would be preferable.

I know rankings are controversial, but none of those schools even fall within the top 30 for computer science (http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-computer-science-schools/rankings</a>), whereas Berkeley is either tied for first (omg!) or consistently within the top 3.

The only other factor is whether or not size of school matters to you. Berkeley has many great things to offer, but its student body is much larger than all of those other schools. If you’re okay with a sense of anonymity, then Berkeley should be a nice fit. You must also be competitive as most classes are curved in some way.

Best of luck in your decision.

I doubt RML is actually making a decision, he said he graduated from Oxford or something like that.

yes LOL…
