Would You Take this Job

I got a job offer to be a counselor at group home for mentally challenged kids during this upcoming school year, which is my freshman year of college. I've had experience working with these kids before and would be a great opportunity and would look great on a resume. However, this is not professional area that i am looking to go into, and i still have other concerns.

Pros: Pay's well about 400 a week for two day's of work, very meaningful job, looks great on resume.

Cons: my shift is from noon on friday till noon on sunday

since the pay is so good i am only looking to do 2 weekends a month, but id that even worth it. if you had the opportunity would you do it?

go for it! Take the job if you need the money. You can party or whatever on Wednesday and thursday nights (and monday..and tuesday) if your social life is what you are worried about.

Yeah, take the job! It’ll benefit your resume and the pay sounds nice. I don’t think it’ll be a burden in regards to your future career, because employers favor leadership experience.

I like kids, and thats not a bad deal money and resume wise so I would take it.

I would however volunteer during the weekdays for the career I want to pursue (so in my personal case I would volunteer with a wildlife rehabilitator or at an animal shelter)

Absolutely not.

Wow, kills your weekend.

Uhhh… when are you going to do your homework and study if you’re working from noon on Friday to noon on Sunday?

Sure it’s possible to do all your work during the week and before you go to work, but it sounds like a hassle and leaves you little time to do anything else. Also, it seems as though this job will kill your social life and would prevent you from getting involved in clubs and other things you’re interested in.

EDIT:

I wouldn’t do this even if you need the money. I think it will prevent you from doing well academically. It just seems like an awful idea for a freshman who’s completely unfamiliar with college life to take such a demanding job.

Also, the pay is not that great. It’s just above $8.00 an hour.

Lastly, think of it this way. Working 48 hours a week + Being Incoming Freshman + Homework + Homesickness (Doesn’t happen to everyone though) + etc. = Bad Idea.

I agree with Newjack88. After the first few weeks of the semester (that is, when the mid-term and paper season starts) I need the weekends to study and have some fun. Another freshman in my dorm initially planned to go home every single weekend for a job and thus tried to get her schoolwork done by Friday afternoon. She quit the job half-way through the semester.
