Would you view this fee as excessive?

My son transferred to a State University in January and lived on campus for one semester. He signed up to live in the same university dorm/apartment in the Fall, but at my urging he secured an off-campus apartment that will be much much nicer at the same cost. He had me fax a cancellation form to the housing office on July 1 because he thought that was a deadline of some kind. Turns out he was wrong. That was the deadline for new contract cancellation. The date for "return to campus applications" was May 1.

So.... he loses his housing deposit, which i think it $100, and is responsible for a** $750 liquidation fee. ** That's an $850 penalty for cancelling a $2644 semester housing contract. Tuition + fees for the semester are $2720. I am a bit in shock. Yes, the penalties are listed on the website, sure, we are supposed to know, we are responsible, etc. I just think it is a way excessive unreasonable fee, not to mention highly regressive.

Yes. I’ve run across similar fees a couple of times. Have you tried calling and having the fee waived?

I remind the person that my child is a soon to be alumni.

It’s worth a try, but to be honest I wouldn’t cave, particularly for a transfer who would only be there for two years.
