Wow- do I have a chance at Columbia?

I'm a jewish male, junior, live in in VA, but go to a boarding school in NY(grades 9-12).

Stats:
GPA UW: 3.5 (my school doesn't rank)
SAT: 2090 (630 CR, 790 M, 670 W)- going to take again in June
SAT IIs: 800 Math II, going to take Chemistry and Physics in the fall.

APs:
10th grade- AP Calculus BC (5), AP Physics B (3)
11th grade- AP Statistics(anticipate a 5)
12th grade- going to take AP Chemistry and AP Latin, possibly AP Euro

This year during the fall semester I took multivariable calculus at Columbia in NYC with other college students and got an A. Last summer I took Linear Algebra at William & Mary and also received an A. This summer I am doing a research program with a math professor at William & Mary and next year I am going to take another class at Columbia and also do an independent study with the AP Statistics teacher.

Extras:
Varsity Tennis (9-12) Captain in 10th, 11th, and 12th
JV Basketball (9)
Varsity Fencing (10-12)
Ultimate Frisbee (9-12) Captain next year
I'm also a really competitive table tennis player. I am the Junior State Champion and nationally ranked. Does the fact that I play this not so common sport help out at all?

member of school key club (10-12)
latin club(9-12) secretary in 10th grade
math club(9-12) Captain in 11th, 12th
Science Honors Program (SHP) at Columbia next year

National Latin Exam awards (9-11)
National Merit Scholarship qualified (11)
AMC 12: 118.5
AIME: 7 (all-time school highest)

The reason I am choosing Columbia is because I took the class there, and I figure that if I can get an A by their standards, what else do they need? Plus, my grandfather and his father went there, so that may help some too.

Thanks for feedback guys!

Yea you definitely have a chance.

what about my low gpa though, I am definitely one of the smartest kids in my school, but unfortunately I have slacked off too much. Do you think I have a good chance if I go for it ED?

somebody respond pleease?!

Your ECs are good. Try to emphasize them in your app. SATs...are okay, could be a little higher. Your GPA is indeed low for Columbia...try to work hard your senior year 1st semester although from experience I don't think they're weighed as much as sophomore/junior year. ED will help. If you're sure you want to go there and can afford it, go for it.

hey.. international here. so not really aware of the chances. BUT. The table tennis and tennis really is a major hook. and as long as the SATs and GPA are a bit higher i'd say yes if i were Columbia. The legacy helps as well.

are you attending the really elite preps like the collegiate school and dalton etc.?

it's not really elite, but many international students come to my school and my best friend from my school is going to Harvard next year.

I'm sure I want to go there. I took multivariable calculus there so I am very familiar with the school. Knowing that Columbia is where I want to go isn't the problem. Knowing whether or not I have a chance of getting in is. I don't want to waste my ED if I don't have a shot.

i see... all the best on your application process!

thanks a lot

Your extracurriculars look strong and taking the class there and doing well should certainly help.

I know your school doesn't rank, but how does a 3.5 compare to other students? Has anyone from your school in the past gotten into Columbia with a 3.5 or lower?

Try to get the SATs up to around 2200, or try taking the ACTs.

I think you've got a good chance :-) Good luck!!

yeah, youre pretty good. my advice would be to first off, definitely take the AP Euro, since you were contemplating it (it's not that bad, and 3 APs is easliy manageable). same, bring up the GPA if possible, but if your school tends to give out tough grades, i'm sure that columbia will recognize it. columbia is such a gamble, so i'd recommend applying to other ivy leagues as well if you want to. good luck!

I think you have a shot ED, but try to get that SAT in the 2100's talk about your EC's in your essays, legacy will def. help. What is your class rank?

my school doesn't rank, and I expect to get in the 2100s when I take it in June. After all, I was above 2100 on all my practice tests..

bump bump^^
any comments?

Your GPA and SATs really don't put you in the range for Columbia as a white male. Grandfather will only help if hr gives big bucks. The wild card is table tennis, I have no idea how they'll see it, but if it's a hook as someone said then you'll have a shot. Columbia just keeps getting more competitive. I saw a lot of top students at a very top prep school get rejected this year with 2300s, great GPAs and ECs.
