hahah, 7 million+ people play WoW, there's a chance an admissions officer anywhere in the country is one of them.

You should also list how many hours you spend in front of your computer instead of actually doing things in the real world :P And tell them what gear you have. It'll impress them.

Double edge sword there. I'd say it depends on the school. As a Guild leader, you have done research, organized raids, mediated, recruited, disciplined and planned. It can be framed well.

Look, I was in a leadership seminar, and was asked what was the last book i read. Well, it was some Star Trek book. The instructor was fine with that, as he thought Star Trek captains (even fictional) showed leadership qualities.

Interesting dilemma. Let us know what you decide.

@rhyn0,

would you agree that staying in front of your computer for a few hours a day is better than going out and doing drugs which could possibly lead to expulsion?

there are pros and cons for everything.

@Nooob,
I duunno, dem drugs sure are fine..........................................................

Do not do it. Seriously. Maybe under hobbies or what you do for fun, but NOT under ECs. AdComs WILL look down on you, especially if you're applying to top schools. I have met many extremely bright people who lost their way in college due to video games -- I'm sure they have as well. That makes you a risky applicant, especially if you play video games so much as to list it as an extracurricular activity.

one thing that came up when i went to info sessions for colleges were admissions officers talking about how playing video games is NOT an ec... but then again some other colleges that you're considering may like it.

I'd say yes if it's important to YOU.

My top 4 ECs are ALL related to website and forum administration, online journalism, and game design. However, I have done some fairly impressive things with them, if I do say so myself. And I definitely wouldn't focus so much on them if I didn't have my heavy involvement in outdoor adventure to counterbalance the "closet nerd" impression some people might get.

It's all about how you market yourself.

I'd do it...it's fine. Honestly, wow, I hate the video game negative stereotypical image here. As long as it isn't flagrantly offensive such as porn/racism community or something, it provides insight to your character and such; if it's what you like. I agree with dailypursuit for most things. but yeah, only if it's important to you.

Because of the image that people who play WoW has...that's a different game than most, but still, go for it.

People who post on CC are probably more likely to be video game enthusiasts than the broader applicant pool

LOL are you serious? I only know myself and a couple others like lolcats that actually are interested in gaming, and everyone else seems to be either neutral or vehemently opposed to gaming in every sense (more of the latter).

"would you agree that staying in front of your computer for a few hours a day is better than going out and doing drugs which could possibly lead to expulsion?
there are pros and cons for everything."

is this a serious post

I don't think you should do it. Gaming is looked down upon since it wastes so much time and has a positive correlation with bad grades. There are tons of other nerds gaming out there and in the same position as you. Admissions officers would rather see someone truly unique and is helping advance the REAL world rather than a virtual one.

Don't put any gaming experience in the EC or Hobbies section. I'm a gamer. WoW isn't my cup of tea (Medieval Total War 2 is), but even I consider gaming to be a mindless activity that helps its players escape reality. As our people are growing more obese, people are blaming TV and gaming as major reasons why we don't do enough outdoor activities. The image of a gamer as an obese no-lifer (which is false in many occasions) are very prevailing. Have you seen the recent South Park episode on WoW. It doesn't help to have the adcoms having that image when they read your application. And beside, would you put gaming on your job resume if you were applying for a job at a top-500 company? It has the air of someone who is really desperate and does not have anything else to put on his resume.

Unless you a game designer who has made millions off your creativity, don't put gaming on your resume.

Jesus christ.
That's like saying I love to party in your EC's.
And for real...WoW? C'mon.
