wow, i had no idea duke was so prestigious

wow, i had no idea duke was so prestigious. at my school, every "just another good student" who applies gets in. it's equated with emory.

duke>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> emory

emory sucks

Thanks for showing us the light bluehunnydew! Based on your very scientific survey and thoughtful analysis, I've decided to transfer to Emory. After all, the only true measure of a school is how many get accepted to your school, right?

wow, i had no idea schools that require 4.0 uw and 2300+ SAT scores where so prestigious...since when is a 2300 considered good?!?! psht

Emory is an excellent school; however, Duke surpasses prestige-wise it in practically every facet.

Equated with Emory? Please its equated Stanford and University of Chicago.

duke is much more prestigious than emory but i dont think its as prestigious as stanford. it has the same prestige as dartmouth/penn/columbia. stanford is a little higher, in prestige anyways.

i wasn't putting duke down...i think it's awesome that it's more prestigious than i gave it credit for. i started the thread hoping some duke students will tell me some cool stuff about their school, cuz i'd llike to know.

I like Emory, why is everyone using it as a basis of negative comparison :(
(of course I like Duke better!)

I never understood what was so great about Stanford. I turned it down and I'd gladly do so again.

Its because its in california. or something like that. palm trees and all.

I think I completely understand where you're coming from, bluehunnydew. I'm from Michigan, and any decent student at my school could get into U of M if they wanted. I'm trying to avoid it for the very reason that about twenty of my classmates will be going there. Here, MSU is almost as prestigious.

emory is in downtown atlanta right snap in the middle of the hood, Duke is not :)

i agree with shrek. Stanford is more prestigious, but I say Duke/Columbia/Penn are all interchangeable.

What's surprising is so many in-state students don't realize what a great school it is. Whenever I told someone I wanted to go to Duke I inevitably got either

"Duke? Why Duke? Their basketball team sucks. UNC is so much better."

or

"Why would you spend so much money to go to Duke?"

It's so frustrating.

Warblersrule86: If they dont know, then it is their loss. You can either:

a) inform them on Duke's incredible academics through statistics and etc

b) allow them to dwell in their ignorance.

I prefer choice a. The only problem with choice a is that I dont like coming off as pretentious. Additionally, people who matter know about Duke. So who cares? I know what you mean, because many times when I say Duke, many people automatically start rambling on about the basketball team. That is great and all, but there is SOOOOOO much more.

LOL, if duke is that bad, can you imagine Dartmouth? LOL When I told people I wanted to go there (at first lol) people looked at me with a blank stare.

Also,

Uhm...

BLUE DEVILs, BOI!

Check out the 2005 US News Rankings for Best Colleges.

Duke is ranked #5, along with MIT and Stanford. How's that for prestige?

Duke has everything Stanford has and more. The academics are very similiar, but Duke has the addition of a spirited body and an awesome administration. (Brodhead rocks!)

I'm from California, and Stanford is not a big deal. Berkeley is associated with just as much prestige. And while Duke is 85% out of state, Stanford has a much larger proportion of in state students, which inevitably gives a more "California" school feel.

Duke has only been a national university since 1924, yet it is ranked as the top 5 in the country, and is continually changing for the best. Duke is a progressive school, and always striving to be the best.

As for UChicago and Dartmouth being on the same level as Duke? I gladly turned them down for Duke, and have not regretted it a bit. Duke just had more of everything to offer me.

Amen ookatneyoo Amen.

I have always considered Duke progressive. The status it has been able to achieve in a small amount of time is remarkable. The fact that I turned down Brown for Duke speaks for itself. Excellent academics, awesome school spirit, great sports program, and a welcoming student and faculty body can only make 4 years at Duke incredible.

And yes Brodhead rocks!!!

i think it depends on where you live...if you are in the east coast/south you probably would think duke is more prestigious but if you live in the west coast you probably think stanford is...i personally would go with stanford

I'm from NJ and I easily chose Stanford over Duke. I definitely want to pursue engineering, most likely comp sci, which Stanford has an unquestionable superiority in. In terms of prestige, Duke definitely has more in the south. However, in terms of overall national prestige and international recognition, Stanford is the clear winner.
