My hs to me is dumb as can be. They're robots here. All they care about are stats and beating each other just so they can be #1. I can't even talk to the intelligent people without them hating the person who is #1 Ranked. They're all like, we won't get in to UVA or VaTech or W&M and Georgetown without being ranked #1. Seeing as how I've had more knowledge from college admissions by having family in the process who can tell me about it(I go to a school where the top people are all asian, I"m the only black guy), they all treat me like I'm an outcast who doesn't know what he's talking about. Funny thing is, they are all stressed every day, and are major grade whores imo. It's like stats and grades define them.

Granted, I'm ranked #11 with my 4.12, but it's the best I can do, and I'm happy with where I'm at.

Do you know people in your school that do this? Or do you do this?

I have no idea why, but most of the top juniors are like this. It’s so annoying.

Yeah it’s hit our sophomore class hard. Juniors are always like this, I’ve noticed.

I am happy my school does not rank.

It hasn’t really hit my class. All of the top people are friends, so its more like if we keep a 4.0 and stay in the top 10 then we’re fine. I think this situation has made highschool much less stressful for me than others who worry more about grades/rank.

According to these people, it’s worse to do extra learning for fun, as I do, if it’s not for a grade.

Our school is basically divided into two categories:

The dumb/dumb-acting ones who don’t care about school and do badly, care and do badly, don’t care and do “well” (cough still pretty bad but just good compared to everyone else around them cough)…

The smart/high-achieving ones who’re leering behind each others’ backs with a stalkerish knowledge of each others’ SAT scores, exact grades, and EC descriptions lol. Within this group, you’d be afraid to participate in a volunteer opportunity you learned about from someone else out of fear you’d be contributing to their app-boosting accomplishment of organizing a peer-volunteer workforce lol. It’s pretty sad, and we’re most definitely not juniors yet. :(

Urgh, a bunch of people in my grade were stressing because they didn’t get inducted into Cum Laude (basically the top 10% of each class), although our school doesn’t rank and doesn’t give out any form of rank to colleges. It really is annoying – especially when they’re not even going to be officially given a rank (not even stuff like top 10%, 25%) on the Secondary School Report anyway!

^^ wow. just wow. That same thing happens in my school.

Haha, carbon copy of my school, too.

Wow, I didn’t know my rank till the beginning of senior year. Yeah, no one’s like that here much, sorry your school sucks so much.

The juniors at my school are absolutely nuts. I go to a super competitive school to begin with, but they just blow me away. A junior friend and I went out to dinner once, and the entire time (2 hours) he spent discussing who he estimates to be in the top 25 of his class with explanations of why and everything. I mean I am all for talking academics and class rank and the like, but 2 hours! on 25 people! ridiculous.

^ That’s… creepy o.o

^^ Gotta agree with fledgling.

My school doesn’t rank, but we know who the top people in our grade are and for the most part everyone’s super competitive. It’s all about finding your extracurricular niche- one runs a charity, one heads our MUN team…etc. And everyone can find out what grades anyone has one way or another.

Wow. I always wished I went to a competitive school (if only to have more motivation, lol) but this is making me happy that I don’t. I’m already a naturally stressed person, so being around people like that would probably drive me completely insane.

Nobody at my school will know about the admission process until Senior year, even the smartest kids (I’m the exception, along with one of my other really competitive friends.) Everybody here asks to know who got what on tests. It’s no big deal. People ask for grades, etc.

If I want to talk college or grades, I save it for my other competitive friend (actually, there are three of us… but the other one my friend and I have secretly dismissed as a threat… he’s got like 6 B’s in just three semesters… :D) But yea. We save that talk with each other.

All of our juniors can tell you each others GPA’s, like exactly their average, and exactly what they get each marking period. All they do is stress themselves out.

Wait, is it bad to share what you got on tests? How does that give you a disadvantage?

I must not go to an ultra-competitive school then… lol

It allows people to target you as a threat. And then some resent you for it, as many do me.

Argh, I hope people who end up going to HYPS and the like aren’t all like this :s
