wow! no more tuition at Yale Music School

A $100mm gift means no more tuition at Yale's Music School. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think many people whether they admit it or not believe "That which costs nothing is worth nothing." or at least behave accordingly.

The finest conservatory in the world, Curtis Istitute of Music, is "free" too.

I think it will play out very harmonically.

I can't think of an example where free tuition at the university level has hurt - Cooper Union, Webb Institute (naval architecture) and Olin engineering school are three prestigious tuition-free schools. Anyone contemplating debt for graduate school has to take into consideration their future earning prospects and musicians aren't guaranteed security. I think it's a wonderful boost to musicians, Yale and the community.

Thank you, anonymous.

It's great news. Just wanted to mention that Yale's music school is a graduate program.

It's not unusual for graduate schools to be tuition-free, so I don't think "That which costs nothing is worth nothing" will be a factor. PhD students at top schools typically get a stipend for assistant teaching as wel as waived tuition. Cooper Union and Olin are so unusual because they do not charge undergraduate tuition. This gift isn't going to affect tuition at Yale College.
