I’m still surprised there are more white people than Asians at a school like Caltech.

Wow.

Have you seen Berkeley’s?

Who says affrirmative action is being dumped?

OMG! One private school that runs its private admissions based upon a meritocracy. What has the world come to?

I don’t know colleges like that… but I do of a school that is 99% white and >1% black. (They have like 500 kids… and only one is black. =/)

oo… and I know a school that is 99% black. It has eight white kids out of 600 students.

=/

But really… Who cares?

who cares? i don’t realyy get the whole affiramtive action thing. it just seems superflous.

i’m interested in that .36 black student…

maybe black student #2 has a growth that counts as .36 of a person.

It’s the schools choice if they want to incorporate affirmative action or not. I think it’s a good idea from Caltech not to because they want the best applicants to get accepted. Being such a competitive school that they are, they only want the best to go. They would rather have an Asian or Caucasian applicant with a 2300 SAT, really good science and math ECs, a good class rank, etc rather than an URM with bare minimum stats who really might not contribute to the school.

exactly! 10char

It’s really just a “sorry” to African Americans and Native Americans for historical disadvantages. As for Hispanics, I have no idea why they are considered as well. Chinese Americans were much more historically disadvantaged than Hispanics. But no, AA doesn’t apply for us.

well i’m definitely sorry for that (though i happen to have a cherokee ancestor and a choctaw one. but doesn’t everyone?), but admissions preference based on race is still racism. against the majority.

wow! so there is racism in the admission process OP, good thing we have affirmative action :]

^^no, it’s just that the VAST MAJORITY of caltech applicants happen to be white/asian. and the admissions people are NOT RACIST because the people they admit represent their applicants PROPORTIONATELY. affirmative action means that the admitees would be disproportionate to appear non-racist, when in actuality it IS racist.

Haha. This is so funny, because I made a speech on the stupidity of affirmative action and how it’s so unfair to whites and asians since they tend to hold more academic merit blahblahblah.

Berkeley had like a 60% asian admit when it first introduced a non-affirmative action decision round, I’m pretty sure that’s what it was.

raise your hand (in spirit) if you think affirmative action is bull!

So, in another hypothetical situation, if many of appilcants to say harvard, yale, or princeton were black.( possible considering these colleges are located in states with large black populations like Columbia is located in New York- New york has the boroughs and many African Americans live there) and the university accepted people who represented their applicants proportionately( you know like HYPC) do- that would make them NOT RACIST?
Oh, thanks- I knew all this stuff about people being upset because there were 6 black aceptees in Harvard was wrong! (when there is a 12% black population in the United states- and the population is even higher in metropolitian areas)

(sarcasm)- apparently it doesn’t translate on the internet
The op says that these stats represent what happens when Affirmative action is gone- he generalizes the statement- and doesn’t specify. He seems to believe that Afrimative Action is a benefit- therefore without Afffirmative action it logically follows that he believes that African Americans would not get into ivy league colleges.
Unless, he believes the system is racist- which I assume is not the case due to the smiley face- or he believes there are more asians than African Americans-the other logical conclusion is he feels that african Americans are not intelligent enough to get into the ivys. Saying that another race is less intelligent than other races- is (hate to break it to you) RACIST !
So long!

Yeah, I do not know what I’d do without AA.

Yay minority status.

What you would do without AA is actually rely on yourself as a person to gain college entrance, not your ethnicity.
