Pretty much every college asks THAT question, you know, the “What is a struggle that you’ve had to overcome” one. Why the need to know every single detail?

If all essays were good for was a single snapshot, adcoms wouldn’t use them (things would be so much for them easier that way).

If you’re going to determine a person’s future by admitting or rejecting him or her (on the basis of background/status), you better have all the information in front of you.

I don’t see how you could give your life story in 500 words. If you could, you haven’t lived and probably shouldn’t attend that school.

No, my name is Irish through and through. My mum is Hispanic and I got my name from my dad’s side. My middle name is Hispanic, but it is rarely seen and you wouldn’t know it unless you were looking carefully at the spelling.

I am also Gypsy and Jewish. A quarter of my family died in the Holocaust (my grandmother was the only survivor). Another quarter of my family has been persecuted for hundreds of years because they are Gypsies. There were laws in America keeping us OUT of certain states and limiting our rights until the ** 1990s **. Do you think I get any minority boost from that? Absolutely not. Tell me, who is that decides which group is the most persecuted and deserves the biggest boost? It’s complete and utter bull.

I don’t see how you could give your life story in 500 words. If you could, you haven’t lived and probably shouldn’t attend that school.
If you can’t tell someone the most important things about you in 500 words, you do not have a future in writing advertising copy.

If I’m an adcom, I want to know something about the person I’m admitting.

Life story =/= most important things

If you can’t tell someone the most important things about you in 500 words, you do not have a future in writing advertising copy.
lol good comeback

And also, practical concerns. Who wants to go to a school with only two black kids? MIT always beats Caltech badly in cross-admit, even though Caltech is in freaking California (and has a higher SAT average, for those types who don’t go outside enough to be interested in the weather). The lack of diversity is probably a factor. What if, in not having affirmative action, Caltech is actually lowering the academic quality of its class, by driving some of the best students elsewhere?

Do the 2.36 black kids self-segregate?

Is California legit that great? 2000 people go to my school. I’ve seen about 1750 graduate. No one ever goes to California. I mean, we do live in Ohio, but I’ve seen a lot of people go to Oregon and Washington. Like, a surprisingly large number of people. And some to Western Canada and Alaska even. I don’t even really know of anyone who applies to any of the UCs, which is part of why I didn’t understand the big deal about them when I got here, but that’s not impo. There are some who apply to Stanford, but the only one I was close to ended up at Harvard.
I would think MIT would consistently beat out Caltech.

Yeah, but the people in the yield calculation already applied and got in (this includes people from the west coast).

UC’s for out-of-state students are (1) expensive, (2) unreasonably hard to get into and (3) give terrible aid. USC and Stanford are the only real options for a person who wants the normal college experience.

UC’s aren’t a good option OOS because they have incredibly biased admissions. They’re meant to provide an education for Californians.

Berkeley’s a little below the Ivy’s for instate selectivity, but seems to be equal to the upper Ivies for OOS. UCLA’s a little more selective instate, and OOS it’s about equal to lesser Ivies. Basically UCLA does that because the OOS students pay more and get less aid –> $$$

[nvm - irrelevant]

nahhh UCs aren’t hard to get in for OOS
the UCs are the safety schools for people in my state
my asian friend is going to UCberkeley with an 1890 SAT OOS, no amazing stuff
UCLA is not hard to to get into, despite what people say on CC, there is a reason why it is on the list of top party schools. and for this reason, i’m not allowed to apply there =PPP

Why do you have some vendetta against UCLA?

Does its “atrocious” 21.7% acceptance rate automatically make it a bad school? What is the reason that it’s on the list of top party schools (despite the fact that it’s not)?

Regardless of what you believe, public schools can still provide a quality education.

^tell that to my asian parents

well at my high school, all the football and bball players are trying to get recruited into UCLA

Wow what are you
Smoking let me break it down for you like this Asian and Indian people have a different work ethic Jews are white people black were brought over here to be slaves they slaves so that white people could become rich then after slavery ended they still weren’t given the same chances that a Asian or Indian got not until recently were we given any chance at all white people started ahead of the game Indians and asians not far behind BUT black people have just started to play so stop implying that black people are lazy or stupid because its your ancestors that hindered our progress

“^tell that to my asian parents”

way to think for yourself there, pigs

all the jocks are trying to get recruited at ucla bc they have great sports teams, big whoop

i would like to see this infamous party school list of yours as well, sounds very interesting

In the end I wouldn’t want to go to a school with only 2 black students.

Umm I’m not racist or anything but if I got into HYP and there were only 2 black kids, I would still definitely go. Same if there were 2 Asians, Whites, Hispanics… Education is education

[Who has the best Party Scene? USC vs. UCLA - The Scene](http://www.thescene.com/rivalry_week)

ok guess USC beats out UCLA

^tell that to my asian parents

Because when it comes to knowledge your parents > everyone else

well at my high school, all the football and bball players are trying to get recruited into UCLA

Yeah they do have the best athletic program in the country. I know that’s a big negative - everybody usually loves to go and watch their teams lose or just sit and pretend their teams don’t exist - but the joy of watching teams win National Championships every year is just something you’ll have to learn to live with.

there is a reason why it is on the list of top party schools

What list is that, piggy?

Yay yay, race wank!!!

1% black----=O 2.36 people

lol lol lol

How do you have .36 of a person?
