WPI and rankings

I got into WPI but when looking up the ranking for engineering program, I found out that its programs are ranked pretty low in the US News rankings (it is even not ranked in some categories). I wonder whether it is a bad choice. Can I have a good education there and end up at a good graduate school? Thank you for all your advice.

It is well respected. It is not at the premier level of MIT or CalTech or Carnegie Mellon but solidly in the second tier of schools like Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech, etc.

You think Georgia Tech is second tier? Really? I might buy that, depending on how big (or small, in this case) your tiers are, but not if your other data point is WPI. I would think of Georgia Tech as a top 10 engineering school, probably, and WPI as a top 100.

To the OP: WPI is a nice solid school. It is generally considered reputable but not exceptional. You can get a good education and get into a good graduate school from there.

I visited WPI, and it struck me as a notch below Hopkins - but on par with any of the big state schools or polytechnics. Certainly it's tough to compare Georgia Tech with WPI. Georgia Tech will have more/larger facilities while WPI will have more faculty attention, and small school advantages.

Looking at SATs, WPI seems to be a little bit below RPI / Georgia Tech / etc.

I'm going to WPI, btw.

Tiers are obviously subjective and will vary based on criteria, but I'd kind of do it like this for engineering. The tier is based on the 75th percentiles for math SATs:

Tier 1 (780-800):

MIT / Princeton / Harvard / Carnegie Mellon

Tier 2 (740-770):

Johns Hopkins / USC

Tier 3 (700-730):

WPI / RPI / Georgia Tech / University of Maryland / University of Rochester

Tier 4 (Lower than 700):

RIT, Most state Flagships, University of Colorado

omg did they send you their little green cube puzzle?!!?!

they sent it to me (i'm a junior) a few weeks ago and told me it was this ancient, traditional puzzle thing of wpi....took me about 15 minutes to solve (of course, i did it by chance) but still, i went back and figured it out and now i can finish it every time.....kinda made me lose respect for wpi. i was expecting more of a challenge=)

lol haha sry, just my random input on wpi.

Princeton Review gives WPI and Georgia Tech identical Selectivity Ratings of 92 so they must be fairly comparable in terms of difficulty of admissions.
