My son submitted his WPI Commonapp for Early Action II 2 days ago. It is a reach for him but he decided to give it a go. He is applying for Mech Eng. Sounds like we won't hear till early-mid February.

His SATS are good (1980) but his gpa is low. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Hi ConfusedMominMA! I’ve seen you around the 13er thread I believe! I hope your son makes it in! It is a good school, and is up there on the list for my next two boys. They each went to camps there last summer. I like the school’s trimester system. They also have good “straight out of undergrad” salaries! Have been keeping that in mind since the kidz aren’t sure about grad school. The 13er was pretty sure he wanted to go directly into industry, but now he’s not so sure… great…

Would your son be involved in robotics at all with the mechanical? The head of the robotics dept is a really nice guy and seems pretty proud of their robotics program. A family friend of ours just graduated from there last May, doubling in I think EE and Robotics. He is on my mind right now because he just got engaged last night on New Year’s Eve!

PS All three of my boyz were born within 5 minutes of WPI!

my3gr8boyz-Thanks! Yes, I sometimes lurk around the '13er thread. I have not been to WPI yet. My son took a tour over the summer (went with a couple of friends and their moms. I could not go that day) and really liked it and the Moms liked it too. I’m not sure we will even be able to afford it if he gets in but we’ll see how it goes first. I have no idea about the robotics aspects of it. A fellow boy scout friend of his goes there now and 1 of our neighbor’s sons just graduated from there in May. they both love it.

Correction - Not trimesters, 4 7-week terms. So, it can tough for procrastinators! They learn in 7 weeks what other college students learn in 13 or 14 weeks! But they take 3 courses per term instead of 4 or 5.

Well, at least today my son got a letter from WPI acknowledging his application. Aslo contained info to sign in to his account to check status and said that we would hear by Feb 10th. Nice just to be kept up to date.

Yeah, the letters are sent through snail mail, but they are also put up online to view as PDFs. Some people get their merit letters with their acceptances, others do not.

HI again Confused! Just saw you over on another thread! Looks like my DS14 and your DS13 are looking at very similar schools (or at least I am looking at them for him!!) I wish your son great luck with his WPI app!! I forget… did you look into Rennsellear (OK. I cannot spell that…) or RIT?

My3gr8boyz - yes we keep running into each other!! My DS13 did apply to RIT. Hubby and I really liked RIT, especially the co-op program. They have a one nt overnight program in the summer called “Colleges and Careers”. We really enjoyed it, it was really well run, everyone was so helpful and friendly, loved the Dean of the Engineering School. RIT is not a traditionally pretty college campus (Lots of red brick buildings) but there is lots to like about the school.

He intended to apply to RPI but I guess he didn’t want it enough because the deadline came and went on 1/15 and he didn’t do it.

hmmm- Is anyone else having trouble getting into the WPI applicant status website? My S keeps getting a “500 Internal Server” error message. He emailed the admissions rep but hasn’t heard back from him. It’s causing nail-biting.

Works just fine on my sons account but there are no changes to report. Considering the time you posted this it’s possible the server was down for maintenance or backing up at that time.

Thanks, ME. We’ve actually tried a LOT of times. As of yesterday, I don’t think the admissions office has gotten back to my son about fixing this or a couple of other questions that he had - but we know they are quite busy right now…

My post time probably looked horrifyingly late, but we are west coast - so it was not all that late for us…

DS finally got an email back from i’m sure exceptionally busy admin folk. Bad news is that he doesn’t know why we are getting the error message, but the good news is he said the application and all necessary info was complete. Not sure if we will need the website any more…but hopefully we’ll have an admissions answer soon.

Thanks, we have our fingers crossed. He really likes this school and is hoping to be admitted and also offered financial aid…But, it is a little amusing that a school which is pretty tech oriented cannot solve this issue (or it slipped in the importance pile, because they consider his application complete.)

I’m hoping that this login is not the site to which you would log in to see the pdf of the decision letter. Anyone know how one would access that? I thought from prior years, that it was mailed, unless you were international, and then it would be emailed.

Thanks! Knowing that they mailed the information, I thought it was odd that they would say notification by 2/10, when that is a Sunday. Ah, well. We will know soon enough! Amazing how time goes by so quickly and yet so slowly all at the same time.
