WPI vs. BU

Which is better in engineering? Which is more highly ranked?

Look up some rankings, there posted previously. My cousin is graduating from WPI this year. He says its extremely nerdy, and to have any sort of social life you have to join a fraternity. Plus they have a lot more work then most places since their main focus is engineering.

But WPI is NOT prestigious at all. BU is more well known and prestigious.

Ok? Then why did you start this thread if you have your mind made up? I just gave you the info I know. For engineering WPI will be better because it is specialized. On the scale of America it is not well known, in the Northeast for Engineering jobs it is very very well known with excellent placement. I don't know enough to comment on BU's placement though.

WPI is ranked 50 in engineering with a peer assessment score of 3.2 while BU is ranked 60 in engineering with a score of 3.0.

WPI is much better than BU. Are you kidding man? Not to mention its far smaller and specialized on engineering. So it's better AND you'll succeed there.

My friend got into WPI and BU and I'm trying to convince him to withdraw his deposit from WPI and go to BU. Smaller and specialized means the engineering program will be that much harder and most of the students are geeks. BU offers many more options if you want to switch major and BU has a much better social life. BU is also internationally known and is in a better location.

Why would you convince your friend to withdraw his deposit? Its his choice and his life, if he likes it there then he should go there. You shouldn't do that.

i don't want him to make a dangerous decision. BU is much better because employers recognize the NAME and pay BU grads more. WPI is practically unheard of and a WPI grad will most likely end up unemployed. can someone give my friend some good advice? because i know my friend doesn't want to be homeless.

Listen my cousin just finished classes at WPI and is graduating within a few weeks. HE HAS A JOB LINED UP. And at that a very good one with a starting salary of $60,000 at Sikorsky the company who makes helicopters for the U.S. govt. All of his friends I know from WPI also have good jobs lined up. Show me the same for BU

BU is very high ranked. I think its rank in the top 100. And its an "university" as opposed to an institute which is arguably better. people who graduate from universities tend to get better jobs and are more well-rounded.

How can you make the assumption they are more well-rounded, and that they get better jobs. For liberal arts stuff yes, in engineering no. Where would a company rather take an engineer from WPI or BU? One specializes in engineering which means its engineers are good, one doesn't. The pick for the person getting the job is easy to see. The BU name will get you nowhere against people from a tech school with the same grades as you, they will get the engineering job most likely because of their specialized education.

WPI is better in engineering, and overall its just a tiny bit better than BU. And bigndude is absolutely right. So according to Mysticgohan's logic, a HUGE school ppl kno gets more recruitment just cuz ppl kno the name, even if its engineering is crap. Would Arizona State get more recruiters than Harvey Mudd College, just since Arizona State has everything, and since ppl kno the name??? Sorry, but that's just about the dumbest thing I've heard. Think before you post something.

but the fact is that employers would still rather you graduate from a "university". they perceive a university education as oppose to a tech "institute" education to be more well rounded and university as more prestigious and able to read&write. i know alot of ppl that never even heard of WPI like my manager at the food service restaurant. and guess what, he said BU is MUCH better.

SSJ2MysticGohanX1000, your acting like an idiot

If you want to work in the food service industry go to BU. (no offense to BU)

If you want to work as an engineer go to WPI.

massachusetts institute of technology
california institute of technology
indian institute of technology

they all provide, you know, "a tech 'institute' education"

just meant to show that the name...institute, university, etc, really shouldnt matter.

just compare rankings for both-evidently many ppl must find WPI better than BU, but ppl kno BU since its a huge university

so answer this, would a big party school of 30000 students that ranks in the 200s for engineering, that offers a WHOLE lot of options, and has avg SAT in the 1000s, and that is a school whose name everybody knows, get more engineering recruitment, than say a specialized tech school of 4500 students that's ranked in the teens for engineering, and has an avg SAT in the 1300s, and doesn't offer much besides engineering and science, and whose name many ppl don't know just cuz its small and specialized???

Besides all of this, studying engineering at a tech school has many advantages over studying engineering at a normal school. I would know this, cuz I'm an engineering major at RPI. First of all, everybody is in the same boat. So studying is part of the culture at a tech school. At huge schools that have lots of other things as well, the non engineering/science majors tend to party a lot, which is always distracting for the engineering/science majors who should be studying, but instead party, and wind up failing out. Also, private tech schools are always smaller in size, so you get MUCH more attention than you'd EVER get at a big school. Again, going to RPI, I'll say that lot of the classes are quite small (like 25 kids), except the math lectures, which have REALLY small recitations (like 10 kids) to even that off.

I think you are more concerned with prestige and reputation of a university than the fit. A student has to feel comforatble in order to do well, and some people (maybe your friend), might feel that they fit better at a smaller institution where they get a little more personal attention and have more engineering peers.

I've read your posts about various pharmacy programs and which one is more prestigous and ranked higher. You need to ask yourself where you see yourself succeeding and not how attending a particular university will look on your resume.

what jerzeemom said is true, but in this case, the smaller institution is the higher ranked institution.

WPI and BU are close in terms of location. They're about 30 min away from each other. I actually come from that area. You might as well ask ppl from around the area what they think, that is if the rankings don't go thru your head.
