WPI vs. RPI for ChemE?????????

My options are:
-Umass Amherst 22k
-Northeastern 35k
-University of Rochester 40k
-RPI 30k
-WPI 27k

Which is the best school for chemical engineering and which school should do you guys think I should choose?

I think its between WPI and RPI. If I include my financial aid loans in, it would cost me 18k to go to WPI and 24k to go to RPI.

PS: I live in MA and am thinking of staying here (or the northeast at least) for my entire career.

I live in new york and plan to go to RPI for Chem. Personally its closer for me but I had visited both and felt that RPI is geared more towards my personality. I have been wanting to go to RPI for about 1.5 years, and I never heard of WPI until the beginning of this year. it really all depends on you.

My daughter has the same dilemma with BME (with almost exactly the opposite financial aid scenario). She really likes both schools and is finding the decision really difficult.

My husband graduated from WPI “back in the day” with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chem Eng. WPI Chem E’s are highly respected in New England (and beyond) and the school does a great job with career and internship placement. I’m sure that the same things can be said about RPI.

Both WPI and RPI are in the top 10 engineering schools for starting and mid career median salaries:

Personally, I don’t think that you can go wrong with either school. In my daughter’s case, it will come down to fit and money. RPI is a little bigger (both in # of undergrads and physical size) so it offers more in terms of majors and extra curriculars. Both schools stress cooperative learning and make it relatively easy for engineers to study abroad. WPI has 4 terms instead of 2 semesters and their heavy emphasis on projects (whether those are good or bad things depends on the person). My daughter found the students at both schools very friendly and welcoming. And then there’s location - my D much prefers Worcester to Troy, but I keep reminding her not to forget that Albany is close by and has a lot more to offer than Troy.

Good luck with your decision!

roop, check out this doc for general info on RPI engineering

BillysDad2014, the link doesn’t work

Sorry about the link. Trouble with copy/paste of links sometimes here on CC.

Try this…go to rpi.edu, and click on engineering. then click on “Welcome from the Dean” on the left. This will get you to the dean’s page. bottom left are several “town hall” docs from recent years. shows the plans of the dean for engineering.
