WPI What Happened?

Hi, im a junior who will be applying to MIT, Georgie Tech, UC Berk, and WPI. I was wondering why WPI is ranked so low. I believe from what my dad has told me this school was ranked in the top 40 (usnews) in the 90's and maybe even higher (30 range) in the early 80's. I visited this school and loved it and it has some amazing programs but why is it ranked so low?

Because a lot of rankings are based on name recognition, money, sex appeal, and multi-billion dollar endowments. This is why so many people despise rankings. It’s also why HYPS has its own acronym.

WPI = great, interesting school. Do not rule it out because of bizarre, opinionated ranking systems! Congratulations to you for seeing past the “name hype” and recognizing WPI’s strengths.

Heyalb, I totally agree. I visited and absolutely loved the campus and class room settings. The student to faculty ratio is on the lower end and one class i sat in on had at most 15 students. The program seems pretty intense becuase you take 6 courses/semester (brokenout into terms). The school was ranked 48th for national research universities at one point and i just want to understand why it has gone down since then. This will probably be one of my top choices but anyone else have data or facts as to why they have digressed?
