Thanks!

WOOHOOOO!!! No helpful hints, just excited about his first audition! :)

Break a Leg S of MTMajorCook!!! Let us know how it goes, sure he’ll do great

Don’t forget anything, take extra _________, have a great time!

So excited for you and your S! Remember to enjoy yourselves and make happy memories!

DD auditioned there last year. The staff and students were great about answering all of our parent questions while our kiddos were off auditioning. They were very nice and DD said the auditions went well. Since MT is so competitive they asked if DD would also be interested in acting then trying to switch over at a later time. This was her first audition and it didn’t go as well as all her others and they did accept her into acting. This school has a great program but Ohio was a bit too far away from where she wanted to be. She also got the impression that stage crew and actors didn’t work well together based on some informal conversations she had the day before her audition when we were wandering around campus. She was glad that she auditioned for the last school on her list first.

Do get there early because they audition you based on how you sign up. We had to leave the same day for a long drive back to her school so we made sure to get there early and asked them if they would allow her to audition in the first group. They were very nice about it and we were finished and heading out of town by noon.

Thanks you changingmt! There is a time on his audition paperwork (10AM), assuming now that’s a general call time. There is no information about the dance call, do you remember how that worked? Its first on my S’s list because they offered master classes with this audition date, his audition is Saturday but he gets to take classes almost all day on Friday.

Thanks everyone. He actually ran through his material for us last night, I was a bit surprised as he never does that. He’s prepared and looks confident in his pieces so I feel really good for him. I even got a sneak preview of his Holiday season solo for the group he’s in. “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” it made me cry. He said if he’s asked to sing any song he wants he may actually use it…thinking no one else will have that in their pocket LOL.

If you have any interest in planes, visit the Air Force museum near the campus. Its one of the best in the world and unless things have changed, its free.

My son is a freshman MT at Wright State University and I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. I know how anxiety ridden audition season can be! The Wright State audition day last year was comprised of a group dance audition, then break outs for the vocal and acting portions. As a parent, I appreciated the informal Q& A session that current MT and Acting students conducted as the kids were doing their auditions. Throughout the morning current students stopped by to offer words of enouragement to the kids waiting to audition. Due to an audition the day prior, my son was not able to participate in the Master Classes but really wished he could have! To be honest, WSU was not on the top of his audition list as we started this process a year ago. But after the audition day, going back to the school in early spring and sitting in on a day of classes and seeing their spring main stage musical he decided WSU was where he wanted to be! He had some very impressive programs to chose from and after exploring all of his options WSU came out on top!

MT17WSU - Thank you! My S had the pleasure of taking classes with Joe Deer this summer at CCM. He LOVED Professor Deer and immediately put WSU on his list. He’s hoping to get to see him while we are there. Is it safe for us to assume the dance call is after his 10AM audition? Seems like a silly question but I’m wondering if he should show up dressed for his audition and pack his dance clothes? We will get to see Oklahoma Friday night. We are staying at the Country Inn and Suites right down the road, are you familiar with hit?

MTMajorCook - Joe Deer is fantastic! As is every other professor my son has had this year at WSU. Your son should dress for his audition and bring his dance clothes. Last year my son’s dance call was 1st but they give the kids ample time to change. I would suggest to be ready to dance 1st which means having a hanger to hang his audition clothes up with (something we wished we had thought of!) and a bottle of water ready. The kids will go off to various rooms to warm up, audition etc. Once our son left the auditorium (where the day starts off and where the parents sit) we did not see him until his audition was over. So make sure he has everything he needs when he leaves the room. I will also be seeing Oklahoma this weekend! I hear it is a fantastic show!!! My son is the male swing for the show so we are hoping he might get put in this weekend…dont want anyone to get sick or hurt though! I am also familiar with Country Inn and Suites. Our go to hotel in Fairborn is the Hampton Inn directly across the street from the Main entrance to campus. Clean rooms, free wifi, breakfast and a really nice staff. What is your son’s first name? I will have my son look for him on Friday!

RATS…How did I miss a hotel right across the street? I always try to minimize my chances of getting lost and that hotel sound like a good location LOL. Country Inn is only a mile a way I think so hopefully I figure it out! We are leaving tomorrow. WSU is about a 4 1/2 drive from here so we have lots of time to explore. My plan is to drop him off on Friday for classes and relax, relax, relax. I may take a hot tub, get a massage, see a movie I dunno for sure but it will be a whole lot of nothing!

How long was audition day last year?

Not to worry! the area is very easy to get around! If you have mastered Pittsburgh traffic it will be a cinch (I am originally from the Burg as well)! Make sure you take the time to tour the campus. Check out the newly remodeled Student Union and if you can, get a tour of the Honors dorms where all MT and Acting Freshman are housed.

The audition day ran like clockwork. You can tell they know what they are doing (unlike some other schools we experienced). We were done and on the road by noon. Enjoy this crazy hectic time! You will be creating so many wonderful memories with your son! My son and I laugh about many things that happened on the audition circut last year…like the creepy hotel we stated at in Ithaca but that is another story!!!

Please tell us which creepy hotel in Ithaca so we can avoid it…

Cello mom - I don’t see the reference in this thread to the creepy Ithaca hotel but we stayed at the Super 8 in Ithaca and it was disgusting. Many hotels in Ithaca were well over $200 when we went to visit and the super 8 had decent reviews on trip advisor so we chanced it. Never again! The sheets were, um, not clean and the hotel overall was run down. It was gross.
They should have given us a full refund and wouldn’t.

Thanks dramamama0804, we will avoid the Super 8. MT17WSU also mentioned a creepy hotel in Ithaca in post #12. maybe it was the same hotel. Tried to book the Comfort Inn right across the street from Ithaca but it was already full so we are at the Hampton Inn. Nothing in Ithaca is too far away from the college.

Ithaca is super expensive for lodging (a good-sized college and a large university in a small, isolated city…yeah!). For those still looking for a place, we stayed at the Country Inn and Suites, at the recommendation of monkey13, and it was a great choice. Not a bad “free” breakfast (got my boy through the auditions, that’s all I ask!) and very easy hop-skip-jump to the college. We really liked the college and the town of Ithaca and enjoyed hanging out with a friend of my son’s who was a freshman at Cornell, too. Hope you all can make the most of the trip! :)

I know this is a Wright State thread, but since you all have strayed, I’m jumping on the I HEART ITHACA bandwagon! When we visited, orientation was going on and all the hotels were super expensive. I found a Ramada Inn Conference Center next to the “mall”. It wasn’t far at all and while it was older, it was clean. For an overnight trip that’s all I ask.

Um, I hope the Wright State audition goes well and I can’t wait to hear about the experience!! (Now we’re back on track! LOL)

I’m sorry I jumped off track when I saw a mention of a crappy Ithaca hotel, my bad!

Hope the Wright State audition goes well for your son MTMajorCook!

Hyjackers! LOL No problem, I wrote down the Ithaca hotels, not that he’ll ever submit the prescreen gggrrrr…this WILL happen tonight when we get to the hotel in Dayton.

Thanks everyone! We’ll be leaving home soon, trying to leave after Pittsburgh’s rush hour and get there before Columbus’s rush hour…carefully crafted driving plan LOL! Got my checklist out, checking it twice. I will give a full review each day.

MTMC, have a great trip, and break-a-leg to your son for his first outing! :D
