Should I write a letter to colleges my classmate is applying to? I feel really strongly about it because he is an excellent - EXCELLENT - person when you get to know him. Essentially I'd be writing something like a peer rec. Would colleges look upon this unfavorably? Would such a letter hurt his app?

Some schools (Williams, for example) give the option of a peer rec in the application. At those, of course! At others, I'm not so sure.

I know Dartmouth gives and option of a peer rec. I think fi you do decide to send one, you should mention that you did it on your own terms, so your friend doesn't seem... obsessive. If you do that, it'll be a great asset to your friend.. I think.

Well, I wrote one of his colleges a peer rec (they asked for one). Most of the other colleges aren't crazy crazy selective (he's applying to CMC, UCSD, Northwestern, Amherst, William and Mary, etc.). I can write pretty well and make the letter good, but I'm wondering if the fact that I'm sending a letter could hurt. Would it do any good?

I really hope you're joking that Northwestern, Amherst, and William & Mary are not "crazy selective".

I didn't even know that peer recs were allowed. Wouldn't it just allow people to get their friends to write recs for them based on their friendship and not their actual academic ability? Not that I'm saying that you'd do that, I'm just curious because there would be no regulation for that.

At schools that don't specifically ask for a peer rec, I think your letter would be thrown out. Seriously, what did you think? Otherwise, everybody would have their friend write letters for them to all their schools or something.
