which one would be the better option? many say either one. i've heard that humanities core is a lot more difficult but you'll be able to get rid of more ge requirements than writing 39b?

humanities core is a lot more work and writing/reading, but if you complete the whole core then you get a couple of GEs out of the way than just writing 39b which is only one of your two lower-division writing requirements.

do writing 39b

if you add up the units, they add up to the same if u take other crap for humanistic inquiry.

a coupe of ge’s meaning = lower division writing & arts and humanities ge right? is there anything else that i missed?

shoefactory: how do the units add up to be the same? the reason why i ask is because i feel that i’m leaning towards humanities but i want to make sure i get to see the pro/con side of it. can you give me a pro/cons to both?

the catalog from 08-09 says this about humccore: (1A-B-C: I, IV; 1C: VII) about the GEs that will be filled.

and i think what shoefactory means is that because each quarter of humcore is 8 units, if you were to take individual courses to fill the GEs, you would have the same amount of units. l-d writing is 2 classes, cat 7 is one, and humanities is 3 classes, so either way you are getting the 24 units… you would just have to take 3 classes to get those units if you were to go the humcore route

I took Humanities Core and while there were some parts that were bad about it (lots of reading) I found it on the whole quite interesting, especially since we got to sample a little bit of each humanities major, like film (we watched two operas), history, and philosophy (OK this part I hated).

dont complain to me when the 8 units per quarter screws up your GPA

however, if you are truly interested in the humanities, i do advise you take it.

jennifer7: how did you do in hum core? did you get an A/B? what do most people usually get in hum core?

shoefactory: so did you take writing 39b? a lot of my friends who took writing 39b have a hard time scheduling to get into writing 39c the next quarter and many recommend hum core despite the workload. what is writing 39b like?

i didn’t take humcore, i took writing 39b and i still need to take the other l-d writing. i’ve had friends who took humcore and some didn’t think it was too bad, while some others disliked the amount of writing. i guess you should just consider if you are really interested in the subject matter and how hard you want to work for it. people say that the work you do for that class really totals up to the amount of units you get.

i had several friends who took hum core and several who took writing 39b/c.

my science friends who took hum core said it was ok, but they didnt really care for it. the only people who spoke highly of it were the humanity majors.

i didnt take wr 39b/c, but i was in 39b for a while before i dropped (took that class at a JC while i was in HS). even looking at the kind of work several of my friends did in the class, wr39b/c are pretty easy if you are actually competent in english and actual thinking/analysis. most of my friends who did poorly in the classes thought they knew what they were doing but, in my opinion, didnt know jack**** about writing.

when i was in wr 39b for about 3 weeks, i found that class super easy and half the kids didnt have brain cells. but im pessimistic about some of the kids in colleges…

i took writing 39b/c

ALL my honors friends took hum core 1a,b,c. so i know about their workload vs my workload.

you can trust me when i say you’ll have a higher gpa after writing.

Aww you caught me :(

I took writing 39b/c and it’s definitely easier than hume core. If you are truly interested in reading and writing and you are good at it, then go for it. However, if you’re not too into writing like me and just want to get it over with, then just take the 39 series.

I recommed Wrt 39 B and Wirt 39 C over Hum Core…too much work/stress, every complains about it hahaah

I’m a bio major with a premed emphasis. During high school, I have managed to earn straight A’s in English, but have never taken an AP English course. Should I consider taking the humanities core? Do the benefits justify the hassle, stress and intensity the course demands?

(although I would not consider myself a strong writer, I would like to improve my writing in preparation for the MCAT. I have also read on this website that humanities will increase your critical thinking/reading comprehension?)
