Writing about community service in Stanford's Common App "Activities" section

"Briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (150 word limit)"

I realize that community service or volunteering isn't an extra curricular per se, but could I still write about it in my Stanford app? I'm quite passionate about community service - I organized a trip to India over the summer where I spent 3 weeks volunteering alone at a center for adults with autism. Could I write about my experience instead of any odd extracurricular that I do? Alternatively, could I write about my experiences as a member of my school's community service team?

I hope that makes sense :) Thanks!

Who are you? What is your philosophy? What do you believe? How did you spend your high school? What have you learned from the community service? What influence you to do that?
There are lots of things you can squeeze in 150 words; things about YOU that you DID not mention in CC, or anywhere else.
Be creative, take risk. Make sure what you write correspond to WHO YOU ARE. You need to write 5 words to describe yourself. Are your paragraphs reflecting who you are (5 words you chose)?

SPEND time on this. Do not list out books, music. USE your 150 words, or 50 words to your MAX opportunity to show WHO you are, WHY Stanford should take you. WHAT do you have that others don’t. After all there is only ONE YOU.
Trust me. That is how my kid got into Stanford. Not perfect SAT/ACT, amazing list of EC, GRADE, sport, robotics, etc, etc.
My kid loves challenge and likes to take a risk. That is what they are looking for. Also, strong communication skill: ENGLISH WRITING------the skill to communicate !!

@daigaku‌ Whilst I am overjoyed about your kid’s acceptance to Stanford, you haven’t managed to answer my question. There is a question on the Stanford app asking specifically about 1 extracurricular that I have been involved in. I am wondering whether I can write about my experience as a volunteer in India, or if it strictly has to be an extracurricular activity that I have been involved in.

Communication skills are important, but reading skills are far more important.

Community service can certainly be an EC. If you haven’t already used it in an essay, write about it.

@pacnwmomof2‌ alright, thanks!
