Alright so I was planning on talking about how after suffering for Depression for a very long time I decided to start a mental health awareness workshop, so that a group of guys including me would present on common mental illnesses and coping with them......why i felt the need to talk to students about mental illnesses and such.......

is this risky?

No! It's very original, and it's good to talk about how you turned a bad experience into something positive.

its a very touchy subject. colleges have to be very careful about their own liability, and are very hesitant to admit students who have a history of mental illness. if i were you, i would not mention your own personal experiences in your essay, but you can still talk about the group that you started. you might want to say that you have had some medical problems or personal issues that you have had to overcome, but i really think that writing about your own depression is a bad idea. i know for grad schools, this is like the number one thing NOT to include in your personal statements.

I think you should definately go for it. Life is about learning from your mistakes, fixing them and moving on, and you have most certainly done that in overcoming your depression. It shows a strong will and character, and that you decided to follow it up by organising an awareness workshop shows that you have a caring personality and are willing to help others out without seeking reward... At least that is how I perceive the situation.

i also had my guidance counselar mention it in her school report. Oh well. Its already sent in ^^
